For a Social Media Professional, My Favorite Place To Be in 2021

On a personal level I’m so burnt out on social networks, but Reddit has managed to go from being kind of scary and full of trolls to being (imo) one of the best places on the internet. By joining niche communities you can really find any hyper specific group of people and (for the most part!) people are fairly nice to complete strangers! I suppose if you want you can spend time on the popular/top general pages, but I mostly don’t. I like a feed that I really have control over myself vs being much more at the mercy of whatever ad driven algorithms.

The combo of dedicated volunteer moderators, strong (enforced) community policies from the brand and the ability to build in auto moderation tools has really made Reddit into a success. And don’t get me wrong, there are ads here too, but it is generally not intrusive. Most brands advertising there right now are still taking the time to understand the space and audience.

To my social media and advertising peers I say: how about we make the choice not to mess this one up too?

Please let me delete private messages and chats 😭😭

Overall i really like reddit as a social media, its really easy to find people with similar interests no matter how niche the topic and the karma system is really cool, i only have a couple qualm with a few features of reddit.

I post some lewd things on one of my accounts and I regularly get 100s of messages, both in the chat option in private messages. I do appreciate that you can “mark all inbox tabs as read” for messages to get rid of the notification but I do wish you could delete the messages thread all together, the chat option is slightly more infuriating, theres no way to mark all as read and to even read the messages to have them marked as read is a bit more of a process, definitely don’t want to go through and tap decline on 1000+ chats and there are some chats that i accepted from a few months ago that i wish i could delete, but alas.

I also wish there was a way to block specific subreddits, i got into an argument with some idiot on a climate change denier subreddit and i keep getting the notifications for when a post in the sub “trends” and things like that, all of the posts drive me absolutely crazy with their idiocy and id really prefer not to get notifications for them.
