Description

If you could design the most perfect social network, what would it look like? We asked this and landed on Retro, a new social app that feels like a breath of fresh air.

Retro is a weekly photo journal that (1) brings you closer to the people you actually care about and (2) helps you appreciate your own life - all without hijacking your time and attention.

So dust off those photos that are just sitting in your camera roll and spread some joy in the world.

Say hi to us at founders@retro.app

And if you’re still reading, here are some reasons to try Retro:

- EASY TO START: Start by choosing photos you’ve already taken and backfill the weeks on your profile with the photos and videos you want to remember.

- NO PRESSURE: Everything was designed with your comfort in mind. Your friend list is private. Likes on your posts are private. No captions required. Update any part of your profile anytime.

- PRINT & SHIP POSTCARDS: Spread some joy through snail mail by printing your photo as a high quality postcard and sending it to anyone in the world via USPS first class. Free for now.

- MONTHLY RECAPS: Create a beautiful photo collage or video slideshow from the photos you’ve shared from the week, month, or year. Then share via text or Instagram in a tap.

- GROUP JOURNALS: Start a private journal and drop the link in your group chat to collect and share photos after events. Perfect for parties, projects, friends, parents, and couples.

- GROUP MESSAGING: Retro is now an all-in-one home for groups large and small, with the ability to share photos, videos, and notes privately in Journals and start group chats in Messages.

This is the app we wanted for our family and friends, and we’re so excited to share it with you. We hope you love it.

What’s New

Version 23.0

Major Postcards Update! We finally made it as easy to mail a photo as it is to text a photo. Now you can:
- Send postcards without sharing addresses. So you don’t have to remember your friend’s address and you can keep yours private.
- See all past postcard orders from your profile.
- Quickly send to addresses you’ve used before.

You can now also save all photos from a single journal in bulk instead of one-by-one.

Last but not least…a shiny new icon!

We hope you love it.

And we love hearing from you - leave us a quick review on the App Store, follow us at @retrodotapp, or say hi at founders@retro.app.

So far so good!

Just started using this and it’s a great little app. It is like a throwback to old days of IG but better: especially love the recap view. I was even tempted to invite a few friends lol but I’m waiting to see how I use it long term. Since you can only have one account/handle (as far as I can see) I went back and forth trying to decide how I was gonna use it: photo dump, visual journal, hobby tracker etc. I wanted to use it multiple ways like I do with IG and the separate accts I have on there but don’t see that option yet. But so far I love the way the app works, it’s smart and intuitive and ad-free. And I love being able to control who sees my stuff and cut the noise of lots of random feeds floating through my own. Great job folks: please don’t junk it up with random access, and ads and filters and reels! Thanks for making this and advertising it on IG so I could find it!

Developer Response ,

Hey knitizen! We're so happy that you're enjoying Retro so far. We launched a feature today called Journals that we think will solve exactly the use case you're describing here. Journals is a collection of photos, to be used however you see fit - it can be for photo dumping from a trip, keeping a private visual journal for hobbies, or having a private place to stay in touch with someone important to you. They're as public as you'd like them to be - so you can keep ones just for yourself, share them with specific friends, or even make it public and share a link out to your journal for others to view. We hope that you like it and that it helps you look back on all the moments you want to remember :)

Just the app I’ve been looking for!

I’ve been looking for an app to capture and share personal photos for life’s big and small moments. Since many photos include photos of my kids, privacy is super important to me as is having control over use and visibility of the photos. And Retro has delivered!

I love how easy it is to post and review photos, and the weekly and yearly recaps are a wonderful delight. I also love how it incentivizes posting by locking the week until you post, which prevents followers from lurking without sharing. The whole design and experience makes it feel more intimate and real unlike other social media that ends up feeling performative and full of ads.

If you’re looking for a more personal, honest social photo sharing app, this is the one for you!

loving the app so far

great casual photo journaling app with a laidback friends feature. doesn't feel like overly curated instagram and is a great way to document your life weekly using photos. please keep ads off. the only big piece of feedback i have is to please move the add friends section down on the friends tab.. i've gotten 9 friends to join the app so far (some of which have also got some of their friends to join as well) and i don't like how it's split my friends into 2 scrollable pages instead of just fitting more friends onto on page and pushing the invite/add section a bit lower. i get there's a big focus on inviting since this is a new app but the invite page already has this so it's redundant to keep it so high on the friends page. also i'd love a feature to be able to reorganize my friends as right now they are in order of when i added them and can't be moved around which is frustrating especially with only being able to see 6 friends per page. a simple hold/drag/drop just like reorganizing apps on homescreen would be intuitive and easy. thanks for creating a great app so far!
