Description

RetroClip lets you save instant replay videos from your Mac's screen as easily as taking a screenshot.

HOW IT WORKS
When you open RetroClip, it starts recording your Mac's screen right away, but it doesn't create any files or use any disk space. Instead, it records to a fixed length region of memory. As the memory fills up, older video frames are removed to make space for newer ones. Nothing is saved permanently until you press the RetroClip keyboard shortcut or use the menu bar to save a clip. Then, a video of up to the last 5 minutes from your screen is instantly saved to the Movies folder on your Mac.

Unlike other screen capture utilities, RetroClip is designed to be left running continuously. RetroClip won't fill up your disk, and it has been carefully engineered to make efficient use of your Mac's hardware. This means you can run RetroClip alongside performance intensive applications or games without any slowdown, or you can use RetroClip while on battery power without worrying about finding an outlet.

WHO IT'S FOR

Great Application, better one than others I’ve used

Retroclip is an amazing clipping software, it relativly does what I need especially since I can’t access my main pc and im forced to use a mac for now. But I’ve had one main issue with it for a while now that I haven’t been able to figure out. Detailed below.

Pros:
-easy shortcut to clip gameplay or screen
-gives you the option to record up to 5 minutes, which is good for montage editors like myself
-It compiles all your clips into an easy to access to folder (which may just be a plus for me since i can’t navigate Mac lol)
-recording and sound quality is flawless
-I haven’t had any issues with corrupted files

Cons:
-attempting to clip both game audio and mic/discord audio is difficult. There’s only a general setting for audio to be recorded. I’ve used Blackhole (audio driver) to try and get Retro to record both in game audio as well as my discord and microphone but it only records one or the other (I haven’t seen if it can record discord yet)
-once in a while it refuses to open and I have to force quit it or restart my Mac (although it could just be because of how old my mac is)

Suggestions:
-add a feature that allows the option to choose input and output audio settings so it can record multiple audio devices at the same time (if possible)

Novel idea works also great

I’m giving 4/5 though becuase couldn’t find how much the Pro version costs and the app just asks to buy right away not showing the price. And after initial cancel of purchase (cancelled because I didn’t know how much I’d pay) clicking «Upgrade to Pro» button does nothing.

Developer Response ,

Try quitting and relaunching RetroClip. I'll have a fix for this issue in the next update.

Great, Fully free now with some notes here!

I have just installed it and really like it so far. Because of MacOS security rules I found you have to install it then quit it and open it again then it will ask you for various permissions then it will work.
It opens in the MenuBar but you may not see it if you have a lot of items there.
It let's you clip up to 5 minutes now.
I couldn't find any alternatives to this so I am glad I found this one. It is very basic but it let's me automatically grab the last few minutes with having to waste huge disk space.
Thank you to James Howard and RealArtists for making it!
