Roadside America
Ratings & Reviews
I consult this app for every road trip I take, even if it’s 45 minutes from home, and I always find the coolest stuff! Seriously, everyone tells me how fun it is to road trip with me, and I explain it is all thanks to Roadside America. And omg the laugh out loud descriptions of these American treasures. Roadside America has given me some of the most magical experiences of my life. I am so grateful. The “on route” feature is a godsend also.
I am not exaggerating when I say that we use this app constantly. It’s the first thing I open when researching a trip to a new area and I check it often to see if we have anything new around us. When we have a day or a weekend and want a little adventure we start here. We have seen so many things that we never would have known about.
So this is an amazing app if your going to be taking a road trip across country. I plan on doing so in a week so this is going to come in handy. I purchased the entire $6 package to unlock all the zones and have NO problem doing so because of the convenience and organization of information I normally wouldn't even have! So for those people giving low ratings and complaint that this app is "a waste" or "crap" because they're too poor to buy it obviously are the type of people who expect the world to be delivered to them on a silver platter for free. I think it's accurately priced, and it's even helped me find new places to visit in my own neighborhood that I didn't know about!I do have a complaint, I find it annoying that the GPS Icon stays in the top right hand corner even if you manually close and shut the app down from the multi-tasking bar. I have to go to Settings > Location Services > and turn off the Roadside app GPS option for it to go away. Even when I manually restart my iPhone 4S and before even opening the Roadside app, and switch the Location Services back on (for the app) the arrow pops back up in the right top corner, without even opening the app. I know it's coming from this app because the arrow within the Settings is purple and not grey. Anyway, once thats fixed I'll bump the stars to 5. Otherwise great resource for finding out "stuff to do for the weekend" and for road trips!
If you love driving around and randomly stopping to see some odd monument to something long forgotten or museum full of things you never dreamed you’d care about, this is the app for you! Remember the great molasses flood of Boston? Ever seen 2 thousand arrowheads in one place? My partner and I are crazy for the hilariously written factoids and have gone on little adventures trying to find some of the destinations on this map. I used to try and find these things on my own, but it’s so much easier and fun with this little tool. I bought their book in the 90’s and I’m so excited that technology has managed to find its way to put that big book in my pocket. If you are on your way to Niagara Falls, why not stop at the Jello Museum? Headed to Harrisburg? Stop in at Mr. Ed’s Elephant museum. It’s obviously great for children, but I don’t have any and it’s my favorite thing to do when I have time off! There’s a small fee to unlock all the USA, but it’s totally worth it if you travel. Last weekend I learned all about Lizzie Borden and saw her spooky grave. I never would have done that if it weren’t for these kooky authors and their fabulous app! Thanks for the weird memories!
This app is lighter (and cheaper) than lugging around the print book. It is also more (mostly) up to date on its current version but is missing some of the newer sites we discovered on our journeys. It's even great for being a tourist in your own town. I do wish the creators could partner with Atlas Obscura for even more bizarre and interesting sites. This app has definitely made my friends and family discover far more interesting things to do for a birthday than just cake at home. Advice: give yourself plenty of time to get lost and really see all there is to see. And don't go with people (family) that get cranky when you do get lost. We went to see the dinosaurs in Elba, Alabama for my sister's birthday...oy! My iPhone map and cousin's Google map were contradictory to each other AND the RA map/directions. We got totally lost. Had a lot of laughs and felt like we were on some wacky scavenger hunt so it was okay. I ended up unlocking the whole country just so we could plan future trips (and in case of mandatory hurricane evacuation).
Thrilled to find out that the Roadside America website had an app, and just in time for my cross-country move! Love the app and all the offbeat attractions. Although I initially balked at spending the $2.99 for the app/1 region and then $5.99 for the remaining 6 regions, it's clear that the money goes to keeping information up to date and the app working smoothly - something I hope continues with future updates. Two additional features I'd like to see with the app include the option for setting a date and recording a short note to record when you've "been there!" so that you've got a record of fun journeys! Another feature would be selection/saving attractions and then creating a route - something that's available online (sort of) but would be super easy given that the app can already export locations to waze/Google/etc. still, 5 stars!!!
