Push yourself during your kickboxing workouts with an app that calls out combos and has no sympathy for how tired you are. Ruckus calls out hit combinations like “jab-cross-hook” in a variety of voices for you to land on the punchbag.
- Calls out hits to land on the punchbag
- Configure your workouts including warmup and stretching time
- Timer with configurable options like rounds, pause duration, difficulty and much more
- Can enable crowd mode to hear a crowd in the background to spur you on!
- Integration with the Health app lets you store your workouts and have them contribute to your activity rings
- Watch app with features like lock screen mode so you don't accidentally stop workouts
- Help section with videos on how to do the moves and use the app
Ruckus doesn't just have to be used for kickboxing. It can also be used for MMA, boxing, muay thai and so on. You can configure what types of moves get called out by the app, for example disabling kicks from being called out.
As Ruckus is a round timer that will optionally call out hits you can also use it as:
- Workout timer
- Sparring timer
- Personal kickboxing trainer (calling out hits)
- Shadow boxing trainer (with hit callouts if you don’t have a punchbag)
The help section of the app contains videos about how to use the app, for example running music in the background and some examples of how to do the moves that are called if you are new to kickboxing completely.
AR Boxing feature
You need at least an iPhone 6s or above to use this feature!
This feature allows you to practice dodging punches using just a book standard VR headset and your phone. Place the boxer anywhere and look at the start button he will then throw hits at you which make your phone vibrate on contact.
At the end you will get a summery of how many times you where hit and how many hits you slipped.
You can also enable "ring" mode which will put you inside a virtual ring and background crowed sounds can also be enabled all via the settings.
This app has been updated by Apple to display the Apple Watch app icon.
Added the AR boxing mode feature which allows you to practice slipping punches in your living room!
if you have a VR headset and an iPhone 6s or above, give it a go!
Ratings and Reviews
Good, but could easily be Great!
I’ve been using this for 2 weeks now for heavy bag work. I have two suggestions for a 5 star app. 1. Use a coach voice (ex. Mickey from rocky)
2. Use the numbers instead of calling the actual punches (ex. 2,3,6,3,2 instead of cross, hook, uppercut, hook, cross) that’s easier to put out and understand. Hope this helps.... also, the watch app isn’t really on par.
App is bomb!
Thank you so much for this app I use it daily for my workout especially since it helps me practice my technique at a slower pace or work on speed when they call out the hits fast. I love how that option is available for them to call out the hits slow or fast. It would be cool if we were able to some how record our own voice to call out hits. Or other random voices like from different movies/TV shows. For example: Jack Skellington, Sally or Oogie Boogie from the nightmare before Christmas, or hulk, wonder woman, voices from hotel Transylvania or what about from scooby doo or even Rocky! That would be cool.
The only thing I will give 4 1/2 stars instead of 5 is that when you call out the hooks and uppercuts I never know if I should hitting with my right or left. Maybe have an option to call out the numbers to help with that:
Jab - 1
Cross - 2
Left hook - 3
Right hook - 4
Left uppercut - 5
Right uppercut - 6
Otherwise 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 this is the best fitness app ever! I haven't used the AR yet but hopefully soon I can. Thanks so much for this app and making updates when you can when something isn't working.
Developer Response ,
Hey thanks for the review, some great ideas!
I am just one guy working on this app so I will look into any issues this week. if you have time, could you tell me did you have issues with the new one on the store? I just updated it to include a "VR" boxing mode and that could be a source of the issues.
I will also look into the uppercut frequency. thanks again for the review they really help!
Good flow and bam you are sweating
This is a nice app. Go intense as you set the level. I underestimated the app when after 5 2 minute rounds with a 30 second break in between, and I am sweating heart pounding. This works for all levels. I have been kickboxing for 4 years. This is more of a fighter style so you are like going one-on-one with someone. If you don't know the moves you will get a tutorial. If you want music playing while you here hearing cues that can happen. You need to start the app first then go back to the music. Just give your start up before the fight bell rings enough time to start it.
