Description

As well as a “satellite explorer”, SatTracker 2.0 is an effective “ground station explorer”. It allows SmallSat users to compare commercial ground station networks.

SatTracker is designed for real-world prediction of Earth-orbiting satellite ground tracks. It is very accurate and, with fresh sets of orbital elements downloaded from within the application, it will keep that accuracy indefinitely. It provides ground tracks for multiple satellites, like some other applications, but unlike any others, it will compute visibility for multiple ground stations.

SatTracker has been used during real satellite operations at the European Space Operations Centre, ESOC, in Germany!

SatTracker uses the SGP4 algorithms which are ideally tuned to the publicly-available orbital elements and, as a result, generates the most accurate orbits possible with these orbital elements.

As well as ground tracks, SatTracker calculates daytime, twilight and nighttime regions as well as calculating when each satellite is in sunlight so that it is visible – assuming there’s no cloud. To help with this, SatTrackerBasic can also display global cloud cover updated hourly (though this requires a paid subscription to a third-party data-provider). The various items which can be plotted are configurable, and so is the representation. The map can be displayed in two map projections: a simple rectangular projection or as a pair of azimuthal projections centred on the North and South poles.

Powerful database functionality is built-in to allow the management of thousands of satellites and ground stations.

Features of SatTracker v. 1.0:

- plots Earth-orbiting satellite positions and ground tracks;
- Sun and Moon position (and Moon phase) are plotted;
- maps show the day and night coverage on the Earth;
- the time can be adjusted freely forwards and backwards, and run in simulated future or past times;
- current cloud cover is optionally downloaded and displayed;
- the location of the South Atlantic Anomaly (which can affect satellite operations) is shown for a given satellite;
- ground station horizons are plotted, taking account of the real horizon obstructions, for both transmit and receive links;
- ground stations are grouped into related sets;
- plots are either on a rectangular grid or a pair of polar projections;
- dark mode, retina display and Apple Silicon.

For features of v. 2.0, see “What’s New”

Note also that SatTracker is a not a video-games quality, 3d graphics simulation, and was never intended to be. It was designed with the needs of satellite professionals in mind, particularly those in Mission Control Rooms who need to see where relatively few satellites are with respect to the visibility horizons of the available ground stations. Specifically for these engineers, the location of the South Atlantic Anomaly is shown (as requested during the development phase of the App).

For a full explanation of what SatTracker v2.0 can do (and a useful tutorial on satellites, orbits, TLEs, satellite radio links etc), please download the User Manual available at https://www.gersastronomie.com/sattracker.

What’s New

Version 2.0

SatTracker 2.0 adds significant new features:
- Sky View, showing satellite positions and tracks across the sky from the selected ground station;
- View Pass, showing a set of timelines with satellite passes plotted as elevation against time;
- both the Sky View and Pass View windows include sky shading to indicate time of day (and the Sky View can include stars and constellation lines too);
- on-screen and printed lists of satellite passes for a given ground station, or ground station passes for a given satellite;
- full support for ground station time zones;
- a database of commercial ground station antennas which can be used to populate new or existing ground stations;
- many more networks of ground stations, including the networks offering “Ground Station as a Service”, GSaaS, for SmallSats;
- extension of ground station communications records to VHF, UHF and L-Band (of interest for direct broadcast of meteorological and other Earth observation data);
- great expansion of the contents of the default ground station database, including horizon profiles for most stations.

It enables the User to manage migration of databases from older versions, where necessary.

The User Manual (available at www.gersastronomie.com/sattracker) has been greatly expanded and now includes some general material for anybody who’s interested in satellites.

Finally a satellite tracking program for the Mac!

Like the title says – Finally! It’s about time someone invests quality time in developing an application to track satellites for the Mac – the direct download of current ephemeris from CelesTrack is a bonus. I like the fact that you can select the backdrop for the map – nothing like having the ability to just get the data you need and move on or use the NASA Blue Marble background to spruce things up a bit. The ability to add custom stations is a great feature and makes it truly customizable. It would be nice to be able to plot out (x,y) the classical orbital elements (i.e. nodal period, LAAN, eccentricity and such) based on the historical ephemeris of a particular satellite, a readout of a sat-to-ground site distance (NRT), 3D view where the orbital planes and various phases the satellites reside within could be viewed, one last thing would be displaying the distances between one satellite to another.

Adding those features, IMHO, would make it a ‘Pro’ application – though as it stands right now it is definitely magnitudes above a ‘Basic’ title.

Thanks for the positive review! And thanks for recognising that to produce *accurate* multi-satellite tracking is a considerable effort. The "custom station" is indeed an extra -- standard satellite ground stations are what professional users use, but the ability to add your own (including now in v. 1.2 reading the horizon data from file) is good for amateurs. Plotting the evoulution of elements is a completely different job and not really practical for this type of software. It would need regular updates of all TLEs and for all the data to be kept available. This would rapidly lead to massive disk storage use. This job would be better done in a free-standing software where a limited number of satellites of interest could be identified. The other features are interesting but were not on the original requirments list.

Almost Perfect - Please add zoom and object sizing!

I love this app. It's almost perfect in my opinion. It's only lacking the ability to zoom and adjust the size of the objects. It's hard to track a tiny dot and small words that are jumbled together with other objects I'm tracking. If you could incorporate some satellite/object sizing options and ability to zoom in on the map this would be the perfect app. I hope we see those features in future updates.

Developer Response ,

We will add this to the wishlist of future features.

We know it's been a while since the last update but we are a small team and are working on several other apps at the same time (both for maintenance and new ones).

Unique and capable

I work in the space business and this app is awesome! I don’t agree at all with MacDaddy077 and don’t see what his problem is. He doesn’t explain it actually.

This is the only app on the Mac which does what we need in the space business. All the satellites in the Celestrak database are there, even debris fragments, and are easy to manage. Lots of ground stations can be used at the same time if needed and are handled in a very professional and easy way. It even displays the South Atlantic Anomaly (where satellites can suffer glitches caused by radiation in the van Allen belts) and no other app does that! There are some missing features such as producing lists of upcoming passes, but the Time Control can help there, because it changes the time forwards or back so you can see where the satellite will be.

I would normally have given this a 4 due to the (few) missing features, but I’m rating it 5 to counteract what I think is an unfair review here.

This is the Basic version and the developer’s website mentions a SatTracker Pro which will hopefully provide these features. Even so: highly recommended!

Thanks for the great review!
