Learn how to build, maintain and manage an effective classroom library and get quick, easy access to over 50,000 Scholastic Children’s books with the new and improved Scholastic Book Wizard Mobile app!
Teachers have been using Book Wizard and Book Wizard Mobile for years to get information on books and share book lists with their peers. We’ve now made it a more powerful tool, providing them with the capacity to analyze, manage and track the books on their classroom shelves.
Scholastic Book Wizard comes with an easy-to-use barcode scanner that lets them scan, create and save book lists, or an entire classroom library to their existing Scholastic.com account. Teachers can also modify existing book lists and share book lists with their peers through email, Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.
Looking for something specific? Book Wizard will also allow them to search for books by title, author or keyword and instantly provide them with information including:
• Cover Image
• Interest Level
• Reading Level by:
o Grade Level Equivalent
o Lexile Measure
o Guided Reading Level
But Scholastic Book Wizard is so much more than just a scanner and book finder. The app serves as a unique reporting tool available to all teachers, empowering them with the data they need to create an effective classroom library. To get started, users must have a Scholastic.com account, or register within the app. Then, download the app, and start scanning! Once they’ve completed scanning their classroom library (at their own pace – we know teachers are busy people!), they are then ready to “Get Recommendations” to receive their classroom library analysis! They can find out where they have exemplary areas of performance, where they need to improve and how their classroom library measures against the 8 key benchmarks:
• Books per student
• Number of fiction/nonfiction
• Guided Reading levels
• Lexile bands
The analysis also includes a list of book recommendations to help them build and maintain an effective classroom library, all year round! If they love some (or all!) of the recommendations, they can add the titles to their cart directly from their app and purchase them off the Scholastic Teacher Store when they are ready!
But wait, there’s more: one of the newest features of the Scholastic Book Wizard app is the new “Borrow” feature. Now students can borrow books from their classroom library to continue independent reading at home! Teachers simply hit the “Borrow” button, check out the book to the student, and then check it back in when the student has returned the book! No more missing books!

Could be awesome, but right now is super glitchy
The scanner beats typing each and every one of my book titles in to level my library, but it's very glitchy. The scanner freezes often. Also many titles are not in the database, even Scholastic titles! So while it has sped up the process, it is no where near what it could and should be. I have not used the list feature. Logging in every time I use the app is a pain, especially because there is no data I want kept secret in the app. Why would I care if people could see my classroom library list? If you are going to make me log in every time Touch ID or saving the password is required for efficiency. Some tips for users: I've found holding the camera at an angle to the barcode helps. Putting the camera closer to the barcode helps. Sometimes if the back cover barcode doesn't work, there is another barcode inside the cover that will work. Step it up Scholastic and this app could rock.
I like having a list of my classroom library books, but there needs to be some definite changes. There are too many titles that are not included, and when we add a book, we should have the ability to add the cover photo and a description. There should also be the ability to edit titles/authors within our own classroom library. For example, the 1st Magic Treehouse book is listed by Mary Pope Osbourbe, whereas #3 is credited to Sal Murdocca. So, when I sort by author, my series books don’t always line up together, which I find very annoying. My first Harry Potter book, the author is listed as Mary GrandPre, the cover illustrator! I’m a bit anal when it comes to sorting books, so I find these things very annoying. It seems like they would be easy enough to fix within the app, so please take them into consideration.
Books not found
I love the idea of this app and it definitely helped level my books when I first starts teaching. I am also an avid scholastic book order user, I send orders home with students every month and often make orders of my own. However, when I get new books from Scholastic and then go to use the SCHOLASTIC book leveler more often than not the book is not found or the levels are not available. I would understand this problem if I wasn’t getting books from Scholastic but I am. It’s really frustrating when most of my books are not in the system. Please update this more often so I can actually use it for my classroom library.
With Family Sharing set up, up to six family members can use this app.
