Great Alternative to Quicken for Mac
UPDATE: Scimonce has released a new financial management program; I will certainly upgrade into as soon as it makes sense. Great hopes, since this original app has been terrific. Perfectly meets my needs, and the developer support is timely/outstanding.
Totally agree with reviewer maxfinis. I have been using See Finance since Quicken decided to dumb down their home versions. I don’t require the complexity of QuickBooks, but need someting more than the basics to keep track of some simple home businesses. I paid for and have used the beta versions for years; now that it’s a “full release” I’m happy to support the developers.
Great product, amazing service.
I’ve tried every finance/budget app for both Windows and OS X. I’ve even used my own full-blown Excel/VBA applications to customize my finance tracking. SEE, for me, is just the right balance of control and simplicity. It’s clean, fast, does what it’s supposed to do, and doesn’t over-reach. Some apps try to do too much, some are limited by their platform (web), and some err on the side of form over function. SEE accomplishes its mission with surgical precision and efficiency, and then gets out of your way. That’s what finance apps should do.
The real reason, though, for my five stars is that their service is amazing. I’ve been using SEE since the early beta days, and over the past almost-five years, I’m still amazed at their responsiveness and effectiveness. It doesn’t seem to matter when I email them, I always get an answer quickly, and it solves my problem. Several times, they even answered within the hour. They listen, fix things, and actively improve. Even though I could have upgraded my non-MAS app for half-price, I decided to support their work by buying here.
Update: no longer Annoying mislabeled transaction field
I totally did not understand the payee field as the drop-down menu within it held only my account names. I see now that I can type in the actual payee and that the info is autosaved. After a speedy reply to my review from customer support, I realizes the error of my ways and upgraded my rating to 4 stars. My apologies for the previous rant.
Developer Response ,
I’m not clear on exactly what issue you have entering the payee information for a transaction. There are clearly labeled “Payee” and “Category” fields as shown in the last screenshot in the App Store. We don’t recommend that you record payee information in the "Memo" field and recommend that you use the “Payee” field. When you enter a payee in the “Payee” field that you have used before then the program will auto-fill the saved information for that payee (transaction type, category, memo and amount).
For not remembering the recent files, the program uses the computer’s list of recently used files. If the recent files list for the computer overall has been cleared, such as when running a third party “cleaning app”, or if you turn of the recent file tracking on your computer altogether in macOS System Preferences, then you will need to select to open your file in the program. There is also a bug in macOS where the recent file tracking can be turned off after a macOS update requiring users to turn it back on in System Preferences in order for the program to be able to utilize the recent files list once again.
Please contact our support if you need additional assistance with entering transactions, checking your computer’s recent file tracking settings, or with anything else related with the program.
