This free app includes pictures you can draw on, sounds you can listen to, and a family-friendly glossary of medical terms for easy reference.
The award-winning Simply Sayin’™ app uses pictures, sounds and a family-friendly glossary of terms to facilitate clear conversations between the healthcare provider, child, and family. Used by Child Life Specialists in hospitals around the world, parents can also use this information to promote positive health care experiences for their children before heading to see the doctor.
The medical jargon health care professionals use can be overwhelming to children, because they process information differently than adults. Simply Sayin’™ is a mobile resource to help medical professionals provide developmentally appropriate explanations of medical terminology and common procedures. This app reinforces teach back techniques that have become the standard of care.
Features of Simply Sayin’™ include:
- Alphabetized glossary of terms
- Illustrations and photographs
- Anatomical images that can be drawn on free hand to
illustrate surgical procedures and medical conditions
- Sound clips
- Ability to switch between English and Spanish for all menus and content
Simply Sayin’™ was developed by Certified Child Life Specialists at Phoenix Children's Hospital. Child Life Specialists help patients better understand and cope with their medical experiences.
This app was jointly produced by Phoenix Children’s Hospital Child Life Department, the Patient and family Alumni League (PALs), and Valley Leadership of Phoenix, Ariz.

The resource I have been looking for
I’m a pediatric ICU nurse and on my unit we do not have child life specialists for the night shift (very sad, I know). With that being said, I am always looking for new ways that I can explain things to the kids in a way that they will understand. I have looked for videos online for tips from child life specialists on things to say to help my patients feel more comfortable and to understand what’s going on but hadn’t found anything…until this. Wonderful wonderful wonderful app. I can’t wait to go into my next shift and utilize this. The fact that it’s in Spanish too…I am so happy I found this.
Such an amazing app!
If you work with children in the healthcare setting this is a must have app!
So happy to of found this app! I use it daily in my peds practice to explain things to children and their parents. I love the illustrations they help by providing a visual for parents and kids to better understand what is being told to them. I have also recommended parents download the app to help with explaining procedures to their children before they have them. Kudos to the group who created this app!
