For sleep training:
Use the Sleep On Cue™ app around bedtime, following any rough night of sleep. Plug in your earbud headphones, lie down in bed with your iPhone gently held in your hand. You will hear a series of tones (adjust the volume to keep them very faint). A slight shake of the phone after each faint tone informs the Sleep On Cue™ app that you are still awake. When you stop responding, the Sleep On Cue™ app knows you have fallen asleep. Following the protocol of Intensive Sleep Retraining, your phone vibrates to get you up.
Next, the Sleep On Cue™ app asks if you THINK you fell asleep, then tells you if you are correct or not. Over time, this process can greatly improve your ability and awareness of falling asleep. The app then prompts you to leave the bed for a couple of minutes, return, and repeat. An hour or so around bedtime (again, following any rough night of sleep) can be all it takes to restore confidence in your sleep. Sleep training can help you reduce your need for sleeping pills or alcohol for sleep (with guidance from your doctor). And after each sleep training session, a summary graph shows your progress during the sleep trials. This graph can be saved and shared (e.g., with your doctor).
For taking a nap:
The Sleep On Cue™ app lets you enter the amount of time you have for a nap, as well as how long you want to sleep in your nap time. For a nap, Sleep On Cue™ uses the same call/response (faint tone/slight shake) system, but once you fall asleep and stop responding to the tones, the app silently keeps going. Then, when the amount of time you entered to actually sleep during your nap is up, Sleep On Cue™ vibrates to wake you up. It's that easy and convenient!
There is even a "500 minute" setting in the Custom Nap module that can be used if you just want to hear the tones while you fall asleep or back to sleep during the night. The tones are very calm and soothing!

I think this app just saved my life. A major breakthrough!
Week four into CBTi, I was really struggling with overwhelming anxiety that was preventing me from falling asleep. Despite religiously executing sleep restriction, stimulus control and cognitive exercises, my nighttime anxiety felt like a freight train that was derailing, despite my best efforts at relaxation and meditation. For those who suffer chronic insomnia, they well know how bad the fear of another sleepless night and impaired daytime functioning can be; and it gets worse every subsequent night of poor sleep. I had initially messed around with this app a few days prior, but didn’t initially care for it.
Last night I was desperate, and it looked like it was going to be a second night of poor sleep. I was already three hours into my sleep window wide awake. Figuring I had nothing to lose (except sleep), I gave the app another shot.
Within five sleep trials, I rapidly started gaining confidence I could fall asleep again DESPITE THE CRUSHING ANXIETY! I followed the simple directions, and quickly realized I was falling asleep, even when I wasn’t aware of it. This is an absolute revelation for me. I’m only running on 3.5 hours to of sleep right now, but it already feels like a tremendous burden of anxiety has been taken off my shoulders. I can’t wait to use the app again tonight. It fees like I can give my anxiety the middle finger and fall asleep anyway!

I wish I could meet the creator of this app and give him a giant hug! This app has literally saved my life. I’ve had sleep issues for about 9 years on and off and swore I had insomnia. I just recently discovered that what I actually have is Paradoxical Insomnia. I recorded myself sleeping one night and was shocked to find out that I’ve been sleeping for several hours when I swore on my life that I was up for the entire night. The snoring confirmed this. 😄 After tons of research on this sleep disorder, I found Sleep On Cue. I cannot believe how quickly it’s helping me get my sleep cycle back to normal. I’m finally getting the REM sleep I need so desperately and I’m SO relieved I don’t have to take sleep aids or pay for a pricey visit to a sleep clinic. This $4.99 app is a Godsend. This app is a lifesaver! So much trouble sleeping – literally years. I started using it a little while before going off to bed and began to really feel what falling asleep felt like. It sort of taught me to let go and not try to force myself to sleep. What a great invention! I don’t worry about sleeping anymore at all.
