Ratings and Reviews
Smart News is really smart
I was apparently one of the first regular user of the app and shared articles on Twitter constantly. 3 or 4 of the developers asked me for an interview via Skype and what Interested ME, was that they were all very young and what interested THEM was WHY I was so interested in the news. An earlier reviewer cited being fed too much liberal news and she should be happy with the addition of NEWSMAX which is definitely right leaning. Early on the developers said the algorithms choose the articles in your feed by the articles you actually read and your interest profile is just algorithms doing what they do but you have the option to choose a tab and read any article from any of the magazine you have added. I asked them to please keep it that was and not to start choosing ( as Facebook does ) articles to put forth an agenda, especially not a political agenda. So far I don’t see it happening. I have pretty eclectic interests and really enjoy the variety I have to choose from. This app also gives you the ability to swipe over to Reader View and read the articles without the annoying advertisements. All in all I hardly use any of my other news apps. I am afraid to count how many tabs I have on my home page! Love it!!

Thanks for the praise and feel free to recommend us to your friends and family members if they enjoy seeing news from both sides. - Imee for SmartNews
Good variety but with a strong left lean
There is enough variety to see a interesting amount of news and information pieces but a larger portion of liberal left material ( I consider myself a pragmatic).Unfortunately, If you want to find a large amount of race baiting and police malfeasance it is overwhelmingly here. I usually stay away from opening these agenda stories.
The generic auto response talks about adding Fox as a preference. "Hi There, Thanks for your updated review! The articles in the Top channel are refreshed regularly, so at any given time you might see more liberal or more conservative news, but ultimately our algorithms are made to provide a balanced perspective. You can easily add Fox News, The Blaze, National Review, Daily Caller, or other conservative sites by going to Discover (last tab on the right), using the search bar, and adding channels. - Nate with SmartNews"
I take all right wing and left wing news stories, from Fox, CNN, Atlantic Journal with a large grain of salt. Give me a break with that generic response! Stories from more quality sources such as Wall Street Journal would be helpful. It continues to be dominant left wing race baiting, police hating “victim victim, pay retribution “ but I think that is more indicative of the mainstream popular media. I still enjoy seeing a variety of articles and avoid clicking most of the overtly biased stories. Proceed with your smart filters on.

After a thoughtful reply from the developers, what's below is my initial review, I have refocused my critique. The app is very good at aggregating what is available. The problem is that what's available in the general media today is difficult to categorize as "News". The heavy left leaning, urban centered, opining of most sources leaves little "News" to be read. I'll get my information from any perspective, but I'm more than capable of forming my own opinion. My critique is more about where we are as a society, than the performance of the app. The app functions well in the environment it lives in, providing articles from today's fast paced media outlets. The media outlets available however are quite often far from "News", and more often than not just newsstand sensationalism with better photos than the old National Enquirer. So, the SmartNews app is good, the sources are the problem. Use as directed.....
***While it touts itself as a centrist apolitical "real news" platform, if one types into the search the word "conservative", only two options come up. If you search through the suggested available sources, outlets such as Vox, Salon, Teen Vogue, CNN and scores of other "progressive" sources of (mis)information are the norm. It can be a source for news, you just have to be very, very selective while choosing your information source.

Thanks for your updated review! Our machine learning provides news from all sides, away from the filter bubble of social media. It's not for everyone, but we like to encourage exposure to diverse perspectives. If you'd prefer a more specific point of view (e.g. Fox News, The Blaze, National Review, The Daily Caller, Reuters, and The AP), you can go to Discover and add the source as an individual channel.
