When to start taking your Social Security benefits?
This is a critical retirement decision. You may start as early as 62 but the payment reaches full potential at your Full Retirement Age as set by the Social Security Administration. The monthly payment can grow even further if you decide to wait till age 70. It is nice start getting the funds sooner than later but does it really work out better?
The answer depends on how long you plan on working, marital status, life expectancy, inflation and other factors. A careful analysis is needed to make an informed once-in-a-lifetime decision. Ratings and Reviews
Overall, good tool to help you see the SS payments you potentially can receive at different ages. I checked with the govt SS site and the amounts are close enough. You input your FRA amount to start.
I think there is a cal bug with the break even point. You can select another scenario to see how many years it will take if you were to wait between the two scenarios. I selected the first scenario at 69 yrs 11 months and the other at 70 yrs and it said 12 yrs for a break even point. Perhaps I did something wrong. Not sure???
Thoughtfully designed! It is an interesting app that can help you decide in a few minutes one of the most important financial decisions of your life. You may already have a bias as to when to start taking benefits. In such a case it can help you gain confidence with knowing how it is projected to work out and allow you to quickly review other possible scenarios. Otherwise, it can provide you with the comparison of alternatives such as start your cash inflow at the earliest age or wait till age 70. It is a great tool to try even if you are being expertly guided by an advisor.
I have tested several programs for analyzing social security benefit numbers. Some of them cost in hundreds of dollars. They do provide more insights and fancy reports. But I like this app for its to-the-point simplicity. No long verbose or clutter. Your input and the results are neatly laid out on one screen. Easy to see the impact of a data change. It also provides reports to back up its summary results. And, for a single person’s unlimited analysis, it is free. This app is my top choice for social security benefits analysis.
