Magical Pick is now...Song! We are gearing up for our new version and in the process we have learned so much about our wonderful users and why they have chosen to use Magical Pick. What we thought was a tool to help guitarist get quick songwriting inspiration is actually so much more, it's a tool to help anyone write a song, whether they play the guitar or not. The truth is, while making noise is mutual between everyone on earth, not everyone realizes is that they are also capable of finding a song in their noise whether they are a trained musician or not.
We have many many new features coming out in the near future and we are grateful to be able to share this first step with you, the rebrand, Song.
With Song, you can write by sound using chord families and communicate with a guitarist or another type of musician the song you hear in your head but don't know how to play on an instrument yet and a guitarist can use Song to get inspiration for new professions and write and save their musical ideas anywhere they are, not just with their guitar.
We hope to help you find your song within for many years to come!
Ratings and Reviews
I really like everything about this app—its an insanely easy way to write songs. But my one complaint is that once you pick a key for your song, it confines you to just the relative chords for that key. For example, I really want to do An Asus2 chord to a B major but I can’t cause the song is in D. Fix plz?

Hey there Music gut! Thanks so much for the feedback, it's helpful for us to know where any trouble spots are for users when they use our app so that we can make effective improvements. You'll be happy to hear that pulling in chords from the other keys is something we are currently working on and should be available with our next update :)
Need an account to use it
Would rather backup via icloud.

Hi there, that’s correct. The account creation only exists due to the majority of the app having features where you are creating and saving your work. Having an account to associate that work with, keeps you from having to save it on your actual device or using your iCloud storage. Obviously, the big benefit surrounding that is not losing all of your work if you misplace or damage your device. You could simply log in on a different device and it would all be there, ready for you. We haven’t had any users take issue with this approach yet, but if we hear a lot of complaints we will look into some potential alternatives.
For an app that costs a slam dunk of $10 I was expecting something a bit more high fidelity and feature rich.
What you’re paying for is a chord library, the ability to hear a little bit of how those chords sound in order, a recording section, and a notes section. While its nice to have everything in one place, the features are barebones. The voice recorder is much worse than the voice memos that comes standard with all iPhones. It doesnt let you trim recordings, if the phone screen shuts off (which happens automatically over time) it stops recording which means you can only play for 30s at a time, and the notes section provides nothing but the ability to write text.
As a person who has been writing songs for a while on his phone using Notes (free), Voice Memos (free), and the chord library in the Ultimate Guitar App ($3) I would say this app is not worth the money right now. It has great potential but needs a lot of fixes and a lot more features to be worth using

Hi CaptiveAudience no. 69, thanks so much for the thoughtful insight on your review; it’s wonderful when we get constructive feedback from users so that we can work on improving this tool to be a powerful songwriting asset. I’m probably digging into business stuff a bit, but I would say the bulk of the cost for this version is centered around the access to the unique chord family libraries that allow for fast inspiration and give you the ability to both see the chords and hear them. This was a multi-year effort from the creator of our library to gather what he saw as playable chords that fit the chord family criteria for most songwriters. Outside of getting those libraries functioning in an app environment, we added the other pieces (progression builder, notes, and recordings) as they seemed to be the most immediately handy for this type of app where the goal is to capture ideas and not necessarily fully produce them in the way that something like GarageBand would…sort of a precursor if that make sense. That being said, we did have a limited budget to start with and built as much as we could in the areas that made sense at the time, but couldn’t do everything we wanted from the get go. We have tons of improvements, features, and overall experience upgrades being conceptualized and planned out for future versions that we born out of great feedback like yours as well as things we believe would be incredibly helpful in the songwriting journey. We’ll be working to build and release those as effectively as we can and hope that you enjoy the app as it grows over time!
With Family Sharing set up, up to six family members can use this app.
