Description

Sonofield Ear Trainer (SET) is a revolutionary app designed to help you intuitively play the melodies you hear and imagine. Instead of relying on traditional methods, SET focuses on helping you feel the unique character of each note within a key. By using sustained drones to create a tonal foundation, you’ll learn to recognize scale degrees based on their *feeling*, not just how they sound.

The app offers a variety of ways to train:
* Degrees Mode - Identify individual notes against the drone by feeling. The heart of SET.
* Melody Mode - Identify short melodic phrases, preparing you for real music.
* Voice Mode - Sing the requested scale degree into your microphone.
* Pocket Mode - Hands-free training for when you're on the go.
* Free Play - An interactive instrument for exploration.

With its intuitive, color-coded interface, thoughtfully designed progression path, and multiple difficulty levels, SET adapts to your skill level while keeping practice engaging. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced musician, SET is your guide to unlocking true musical fluency through intuitive, feeling-based ear training.

What’s New

Best Ear Trainer

I love this app! Rather than intervals it uses scale degrees against a drone which is very helpful for internalizing the feeling of the note and closer to how we actually hear and play music. The graphics too are a useful aid. The exercises are essentially just fun games. You can play scale degree recognition or scale degree voice production (sing the note correctly against a drone rather than just hearing it) or melody recognition. You can play the escalating levels in difficulty/amount of degrees or create custom exercises to target your weak areas. Additionally there is free play mode where you can practice your recognition and production skills by choosing which degree sounds and without the pressure of time and score. Lastly, there is pocket mode which plays degrees randomly against a drone and identifies each one after it plays. This is great for practicing while driving etc. In short, this is the most useful and fun ear training app I ever experienced. Can’t recommend enough!

Amazing!

This is such a fantastic training tool! I’ve been able to hear/feel the tonic in a solid chunk of music for a little while now, and I have tried to identify scale degrees on the fly (with limited success) so the drone really makes ear training feel really familiar.

The only thing I could possibly want would be a way to switch between 12TET and a drone/key-adjusted just intonation scheme (I’d go with the asymmetric one, personally, with its simpler ratios, as there’d be no fear of the wolf fifths given the keying to the drone). I think that’d make a lot of vocalists and fretless folks a bit happier.

Thank you for the lovely bit of software!

That's great! Thank you. Yes, a tonic-based, 5-limit JI system will be coming to Sonofield in the future. Stay tuned... get it?

Sonofield Review After Two Days

This is the most elegant ear training app I’ve ever used. In practice it feels less like academic study and more like meditation. So far I’ve even noticed that it forces me to actually feel the breadth of my emotions when identifying notes which is the first time I’ve ever experienced that while using an ear training app. I love the rapid fire nature of it. It keeps you from doing too much internal referencing of a tonality (moving scale wise up or down to find the tonic) and I’m already finding that my relative pitch has noticeably improved in my short time using. Max did a great job putting this together!

Ah that's amazing to hear. Thank you for the kind words and for the review!
