Open an account in English with the Sony Bank Open Account app
Designed especially for international residents of Japan, the Sony Bank Open Account app provides you with a safe and secure way to open a bank account.
This app allows you to scan required documents, enter your personal information and submit your application directly from your smartphone in one sitting.
The Sony Bank Open Account app is not available outside of Japan. Applications made from outside of Japan cannot be accepted.
How to Apply for a Sony Bank Account
Step 1: Install the app
Step 2: Scan the required documents and enter your information
Step 3: Set the required passwords
Step 4: Submit your application
Step 5: Receive the application confirmation email from Sony Bank
* Only international residents of Japan can open an account with the Sony Bank Open Account app.
* Each customer is limited to one Sony Bank account.
* Please note that U.S. citizens or those with jurisdiction of residence in countries other than Japan will be required to submit additional documentation.

Terrible App
The web versions, for no good reason, is only for applicants with kanji in their legal name.
This version works just fine, and can accept MyNumber.
For some reason, the English version is confined to this useless app which can’t properly use the cameras on any iPhone model made in the past 2 and a half years, and thus can’t work. It also can’t accept a simple photo upload from the good camera app (the free one that comes with the phone and actually works) for no good reason, and also doesn’t support manually filling things in.
Sony should be ashamed to have this stay so low functioning for this long. It’s been broken forever, it seems.
Also just let folks who can read Japanese fill out the web form regardless of whether they’re foreign or not. What year is it?!
This was a dealbreaker for me and has me going to a different bank now.
Terrible
App keeps telling me my card is expired when it isn’t. Also refuses to scan my gender from the zairyu card although the scan is perfectly clear. Since it doesn’t scan the gender I can’t proceed with the application.
Worked fine for me
Unlike at least one other previous reviewer, this worked totally fine for me. Very easy to use.
