Speak: Language Learning 4+

Over the past year I've been using several apps to learn Spanish. I've only been using Speak for a week but it is already my favorite one. Many apps don't give you much instruction or explanation and just throw you into word games. Speak gives you reasonably frequent interactive instructional videos (where it pauses to have you repeat the word or phrase that is being introduced) and focuses on just one type of exercise, speaking, with a lot of repetition and small variations during each exercise. I think this more focused and practical approach really helps cement the new words and concepts.

One small gripe: the UI doesn’t feel as intuitive as it could. For example, when most apps are waiting for voice input there will be some kind of animation, but not on Speak. And in most cases, but not all, you have to tap the bottom of the screen to continue after each question, unless you tap the faint, cryptically named “HFM” button on the top, in which case it will automatically advance after a second or two. But then with HFM on, if you make a mistake you don’t get a chance to correct it, it still just advances to the next question.

If you’re looking for a free app this is not it. This one wants to charge you $99 to keep using it. As a poor college student, I can’t afford it. I wish there was a daily free and paid version so I could keep using it. Just from the only free lesson they give you I could tell this app was good.

Even though I’m disappointed at least I have day’s worth of free phrases to use with my friend like “¿Cómo va todo?”If you have the $99 unlike me, then you’ll definitely love it. The app doesn’t just provide you with head knowledge it allows you to interact with languages through conversation.

And the lesson from the teacher that helps explain everything that you’re learning and is available to ask questions for premium members is awesome .

I really do like this app. But definitely their sign up process is shady and misleading. I was charged $250 for the premium account after the week trial. Yes, I recognize that is my fault but nowhere (in the 1 reminder email they sent or on their website) do they detail that cost nor explain what you get for it. They send me about 10 notifications a day to do my lesson and they don’t have a single notification about the trial ending. And that’s my second issue - they have very nice lessons but they only have 5 levels. $250 for 5 levels just up to past tense verbs is not a good deal. When I contacted them, they said “Our team is currently working on a project to create new courses, but we kindly ask for your understanding as we are unable to provide an exact release date at this time.” And suggested I used the free talk and speak tutors. Those are cool, but ChatGPT can do the same for me for free. I asked if that meant the lessons were actually coming and they couldn’t commit. It just feels like they made a flashy glossy app to 10% done to get people to pay and then they aren’t doing more.
