Description

Speak Up helps Parkinson’s patients practice their speech.

The Speak Up for Parkinson’s app is a useful tool for Parkinson’s patients to practice their speech. The approach pays special attention to the volume of the patient’s voice, a key factor that helps to address several of the challenges faced with Parkinson’s. Two practice tools are included: 1) Words & Phrases, a series of random statements are presented for the user to speak; and 2) Reading & Conversation, a free-form area allowing longer practice sessions. With both tools a volume meter is provided as well as audio/video feedback. The app also provides helpful Speaking Tips and additional information. Brought to you by the Northwest Parkinson’s Foundation.

No access to camera or microphone

I have installed and uninstalled the app a few times and it is useless. The app says I need to allow access to the mic, etc but my iPad does not recognize that it is downloaded. Is there a fix for this????

The app won’t connect to my iPad microphone and camera

The Speak Up for Parkinson’s app has been a great help to me. I’ve had Parkinson’s since 2008, and have used it regularly, without a problem. Recently, however, when I have opened the app, it cannot open my iPad’s camera or microphone. I have tried uninstalling the program and reinstalling it, and I get the same result. This makes me act useless. I am disappointed, and I hope there is a better app in the works.

Nice idea for an app. It's good for words and phrases. It's great to have the video of the speaker with the biofeedback.
However, the app crashes frequently. The target volume is too high when the mic is 15-18" from the iPad speaker. The phrase bank is way too small. (We got duplicates in <5 trials.) It should include paragraphs and poems and such for reading.
I would love to see a graph with volume on the Y-axis and time on the X-axis (for speakers whose intensity drops at the end of his phrases.)
Looking forward to version 2.0!
