Exclusive to macOS, SpeedScriber brings affordable, insanely fast and amazingly accurate automated transcription right to your desktop.
PLEASE NOTE: SpeedScriber is designed for professional content creators who are transcribing audio or video files with well-recorded audio and destined for editing and distribution. SpeedScriber is NOT designed for transcription of meetings, lectures or interviews recorded with phones or voice recorders.
Never wait hours or days for transcripts again. With good quality audio, SpeedScriber delivers transcripts at a speed and accuracy you won't believe. A 60 minute file is typically transcribed in less than 10 minutes.
Uses industry-leading automatic speech recognition technology for accurate transcripts with timestamps (or timecode if present). Supports Dutch, English (Australian/British/North American accents), French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish languages with detection of different speakers.
Use audio or video files from Finder or drag a Final Cut Pro X library to the SpeedScriber icon for import of clips (audio/video/sync/multicam/compound). Choose which audio channels should be used in the file for the best quality transcription. Click the Transcribe button and grab a coffee while we work some magic.
SpeedScriber's unique and innovative interface makes it the fastest way to make punctuation and word corrections to the transcript. As the file is played, the current word is highlighted in orange. Click on any word to position the media file to that word. Add and edit speaker names with choice of nine colors so you can easily distinguish one speaker from another. Save custom words so they can applied elsewhere in the transcript with just a single click.
SpeedScriber supports printing of transcripts and export to PDF, plain text, Avid Media Composer script format, Final Cut Pro X XML and Word (.docx). For captioning purposes you can export to Avid DS caption format, iTunes Timed Text and SubRip (.srt). If you use Adobe Premiere Pro CC, we have that covered too with the SpeedScriber panel (free download available separately).
PLEASE NOTE: As an internet-based service, SpeedScriber requires creation of a free online account. 15 free minutes will be added to your account when your email address is verified. Free minutes usage is intended for evaluation purposes and will result in partial transcription of imported files. Additional minutes for full transcriptions can be purchased at any time. Final Cut Pro X integration requires version 10.3 (or later). SpeedScriber panel for Premiere Pro requires 11.1, 12.0.1 or 12.1 versions. Ratings and Reviews
BEST there is and...
We've been producing documentary TV for years. Way back in the day long interviews were transcribed by hand. Later on they moved to computer or were sent out to a service.
Now we use SpeedScriber. Is it perfect? No. It misses words and sometimes misassigns speakers. But it is the overall best of all solutions. Hence the 5 stars.
It's incredibly fast. Relatively inexpensive. It is accurate enough to make paper edits or export favorites to use in a cut. It's amazing for tracking back to the original material for the "we need a sound bite and we can't recall who said what" moments. Especially when deadlines loom.
We find we can easily screen material and make edit plans in the app itself, freeing up the edit machines/software. Nice productivity benefit there.
We are using it from the instant our footage is uploaded to after a project has been delivered.
Yes, the app/service needs improvement. We beg for it. The more accurate it becomes the more uses we find for it. We love that the developer is adding features and squashing bugs. We are also happy that the business model has a revenue stream so it can grow and improve.
We hope the future brings an even more powerful app at even lower prices. We are fans.

Let down by irrepairably bad transcription
The app itself is quite nice, and works pretty well. Though I didn’t really explore the editing & correcting tools, because the transcription on the 15m test file I tried was astoundingly bad. e.g. it identified eleven speakers when there were three. It completely missed some of the opening dialogue. I couldn’t even follow where in the transcript I was w.r.t. listening to the audio file separately, it was so utterly unrelated to what was actually said.
Granted the audio file I tested with wasn’t fantastic quality, but that was rather the point - I don’t always have the luxury of a good mic setup or recording environment. And I could have been far more brutal - it was merely a cheap omnidirectional mic placed on the table in front of the speakers, in a quiet room. I’d hate to think how this tool would handle a recording that actually has background noise.
In fairness I’m yet to find any automated transcription tool or service that’s good enough to be worth using. This one seems a bit worse than others I’ve tried, though, such as Dragon Dictate.

Useful for video editing
The transcription is impressive as far as algorithms go. It’s not nearly good enough for publication (yet), because correcting the errors would take as long as doing it by hand, but more than sufficient to help index an interview for video editing purposes. I used an audio clip recorded by production quality mics.
I used the roundtrip workflow with Final Cut Pro X as described in the (well made) video tutorial, and found that it has saved me a ton of time. I used to transcribe interviews with timeline markers, all by hand, but on a recent project with 2+ hours of footage, I decided it was time for something faster.
The application itself is pleasant and intuitive, and I appreciate that I can go through the whole transcript and highlight sections to mark as indexed favorites in FCPX. When I import back into FCPX, I can quickly drop the favorited excerpts into the timeline and start editing. Awesome.
For my purposes, the pricing ($0.50/min) is just ok. I have to feel mildly desperate, and I won’t use it for every project. I could hire a human and get a better transcript for the same rate, but I wouldn’t have the excellent FCPX integration or speed. So I’m not blown away by the value, but I am pretty impressed by how much time SpeedScriber saved me today.
I would pay $30/month for unlimited minutes in a heartbeat.

Thanks for the review. Being able to highlight sections and bring them into FCPX is definitely a time-saving feature!
