SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, was founded in 1955 to advance light-based technologies.

Serving more than 264,000 constituents from approximately 166 countries, the not-for-profit society advances emerging technologies through interdisciplinary information exchange, continuing education, publications, patent precedent, and career and professional growth.

SPIE annually organizes and sponsors approximately 25 major technical forums, exhibitions, and education programs in North America, Europe, Asia, and the South Pacific.

In 2016, SPIE provided $4 million in support of education and outreach programs.

SPIE publishes the SPIE Digital Library, containing more than 450,000 research papers from the Proceedings of SPIE and the Society's 10 scholarly journals with around 18,000 new papers added each year, and more than 260 eBooks from the SPIE Press catalog. The SPIE Press publishes print monographs, tutorial texts, Field Guides, and reference books. SPIE also publishes a wide variety of open access content.

Membership includes Fellows and Senior Member programs. The Society has named more than 1,000 SPIE members as Fellows since 1955, and implemented its Senior Member program in 2008.

The SPIE awards program serves to recognize outstanding contributions from individuals throughout the scientific community.

The SPIE international office is located in Bellingham, Washington and the SPIE Europe office is located in Cardiff, Wales.

Better than nothing by a bit, but unrealiable

The concept is great. Certainly makes scheduling easier. App is flaky, but this might be due to bad conference data files. At my current conference and I think another it would crash when I try to open the events section where the conferences are taking a good half dozen tries to get it to load. Once I get it, app works ok.

It would be helpful to show authors, or at least the presenter name under each paper title instead of having to click through the tabs at the top of the page.

Also, talks should all be listed chronologically in the “today” section, not in conference order.

It works for

I'd had this app for about a week and then it suddenly started misbehaving. I contacted the developer this morning and it turns out there was some sort of server issue that was causing bad data to be returned. Apparently the problem's fixed and and some changes were made to prevent it from happening in the future. We'll see. In the mean time it's been really helpful navigating the San Francisco conference.

I agree a better calendar view in the schedule part would be nice.

Lost everything!

Every year I try to use this app to find relevant talks at Photonics West, and every year it disappoints badly. This year it looked better: fewer crashes and better layout. So I spent several hours putting together a schedule. Then it crashed and I lost everything. So once again it managed to disappoint!

Get your act together, SPIE! Photonics West is too big for a paper program. The 396-page paper program is so daunting and poorly laid out that it's useless, so an app is essential. But it's too bad the app is also useless. Actually, it's worse than useless--it also wastes hours of our time.
