Duran Duran's keyboard Nick Rhodes mentions Star Walk as his favourite app:
“It’s brilliant, and if you’re ever somewhere with a clear sky and no light pollution, it’s a revelation. It’s beautifully designed and makes clever use of the available technology. I’m fascinated by astronomy, but even if you’re not, give this a go.”

Astronomical calendar, deep space objects, meteor showers, dwarf planets, asteroids, comets, and satellites are available through the STAR WALK PLUS subscription.
‣ Launch the app and point your device at the night sky - you'll see the stars, planets, satellites, and constellations in their proper place from your location. As you move your device, the star map updates in real time.*
‣ Every object you tap has an (i) next to its name, tap it to access some information.
‣ A scale on right is the “Time machine”, slide it to explore the map of the night sky of tomorrow or years ago.
‣ A calendar of celestial events will make sure you never miss anything interesting.
‣ Tap Augmented Reality icon in the upper right corner to add the image from your camera to your sky view.
‣ Use Night Mode to go easy on your eyes and preserve night vision when exploring the Universe.
‣ Star Walk is your personal planetarium. Project to a big screen with no picture quality loss.
*This feature (Star Spotter) is available for devices with digital compass. If your device does not have the digital compass, you can use your fingers to change the view of the sky map.
STAR WALK PLUS removes ads from the app and gives you access to the calendar with astronomical events, deep space objects, meteor showers, dwarf planets, asteroids, comets, and satellites. It offers a one-week free trial followed by an auto-renewing subscription.
Payment will be charged to iTunes Account at confirmation of purchase, and your account will be charged for renewal within 24-hours prior to the end of the current period. Subscription automatically renews unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24-hours before the end of the current period. Awesome App for an Awesome Universe
This app should teach and thrill anyone from rank amateurs (like me) to advanced astronomy students. It literally takes you out of this world into the universe, regardless of your local time and place. Orient the app by waving your phone a few times in figure-8 motion to find your true horizon on the screen. In the northern hemisphere, turn the app due south and allow satellite view to see and identify what we humans have put up there, for better or worse. From due south, move straight up to the ecliptic to see the constellations and planets currently overhead. Follow the ecliptic around our planet to see what’s overhead elsewhere. Tap a planet, nebula, constellation, etc. to learn more; follow a Wikipedia link to learn yet more.

So glad that you enjoyed our app. Thank you very much for writing this amazing review! It is highly appreciated.
Too difficult to read
Maybe it’s a bad setting or something but I find the data in the app very hard to read. When I first got the app several years ago it was fine but it keeps getting “prettier” and less useful. For one thing, object labels are missing if they are near the edge of the screen. As you get them closer to the center their labels show up as an unreadable gray. Finally, when they are almost in the center they are in a tiny but somewhat readable white font. Why aren’t they white all the time? If you’re using the app to try and find something you have to center the thing first. That’s hard to do if you don’t know where it is. Another hard thing to see is the horizon. It’s very subtly darker than the sky. Why not make it better defined? The planets are hard to find too. The pretty icons on the map can help but the red text is too dark against the black background. Things near the galactic equator are hard because the Milky Way image is much too bright. Finally, the new moon is shown as black. OK, it really is but if you’re trying to find it, good luck. If you center where this invisible object is, of course, then you may be able to spot the tiny white label. It would hurt the prettiness, I guess, but I’d love to see a white outline on it. Finally, this is the slowest app I have when I start it. It has pretty little animations of its name for a good 10 seconds. I didn’t get it for that. Basically it sacrifices utility for aesthetics.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. There are a plenty of objects shown on the screen at the same time, if all of them was labeled, you wouldn't be able to read anything. So the stars are not labeled unless selected, but planets, satellites, meteor showers and the Sun and the Moon are labeled permanently, except the case when a satellite goes 2/3 off the screen area. Planets (the Moon as well) can be easily spotted if follow the ecliptic or with the search option (the magnifier in the lower left corner of the screen). Your remarks on the fonts color and size are greatly appreciated and will be taken into consideration. The launch time depends on your hardware solution, on A9 and higher cpu it takes about 2 seconds, on A8 – about 5 seconds.
I have owned this app for years. Paid the full price for it, 9.99 (at the time really expensive... pretty pricy even now!) I used it seriously three or four times a year for the last 5 years planning camping trips to coincide with cool astronomy events like the total solar eclipse and all sorts of meteor showers. I loved it. Raved about it to my friends. Even showed it off to my dad. It is a part of my start screen and I pulled it out every camping trip.
Imagine my disappointment, upon opening it so it can enhance my viewing of the perseid meteor shower, which I am camping for, right now, this very evening and none of the previously available features are available to me unless I pony up MORE money for a subscription service. I am really upset.
Farewell, Star Walk. You were a beautifully designed and useful app once. I’m sure you still are beautiful...You enhanced my love for the stars. I guess my wallet is just not large enough to follow you down that subscription rabbit hole. I am so sad.

We are awfully sorry for that. Please contact our support team from the app menu and tell them about your problem. You do not have to pay for the app twice if it has already been purchased before. We hope that this situation will be resolved and you will continue enjoying the app. Thank you for being our user.
