Writing a novel is a creative process and like all creative processes, sometimes it’s hard to get started. StoryMill will be appreciated by the professional novel writer, but we really designed it for folks like you. With StoryMill, you can take your idea for mystery, romance, adventure, action or science fiction and turn it into that novel you know is within but just needs a little help getting out.
StoryMill is built so that you can develop your characters, locations and all the other elements of your story. You can set a daily writing goal and keep track of it using the Progress Meter. There are handy things to help you keep track of cliches and monitor how many times you use a word. There’s a place for all your research – add pictures, files and notes right into StoryMill – keeping it altogether and available whenever you need it.
StoryMill is the only novel writing app that includes a Timeline feature. Visually and interactively displaying a story across time, you can arrange the scenes of your novel in chronological order.
Bottom line...StoryMill gives you all the tools you’ll need for writing your own best seller.
• Resolved a number of issues relating to Mac OS X 10.7 autosave, by restoring StoryMill's previous autosave implementation
• Fixed a problem where captions added to pictures were not always getting saved
• Fixed a problem where assigning a Storyiine via the Info pane, would fail to save the Storyline selection
• Fixed a problem where assigning a scene to a chapter would not "stick" under certain circumstances

A decent first effort ...
... but it lacks the deep community, stability and advanced features of Scrivener. If you are serious about your writing, I'd suggest heading to Literature and Latte and downloading the trial version before buying this app. Yes, Scrivener currently costs more, but is well worth the investment.
Two Days of Data Lost After Consistently Using Cmd S and "File Save"
I downloaded and began using StoryMill 4.0.5 three days ago. I printed and read the Instruction Manual. Pretty basic. To save, it's the usual two options - Command/S or File Save. I’ve been going at my project enthusiastically and I’m a fanatic about saving. I save constantly because I go back through my material frequently, cutting and pasting data between Characters and Scenes. Everything was running smoothly and when I finished up this evening, I closed my project. I remembered one more thing. I opened the project I just closed and all of my work for the last two days is missing - GONE! I went to Time Machine and it, too only has the data from the first day. After losing so much, I checked the Mariner Software StoryMill forum and found that MANY people suffered this difficulty over a year ago and it still has not been fixed. I wish I had read the forum before I trusted this software with my book. Frustrated and angry don’t begin to describe how I feel.
Was happy for a while, until it would mix up data
I had this software for a while and used it every now and then, mainly to keep track of my characters. But whenever I go to create a new character, the new one would have the previous character’s data instead. And when I deleted that data from the new character’s file, it would also delete the previous character’s data! It had a few other issues that weren’t as serious, but still pretty annoying. But I paid $40 for this app! Update it and fix the issues! For those interested in buying, you’re better off with just using a simple word processor or Google Docs instead.
