Editors’ Notes

Friendly competition with a like-minded sporting community is a big part of Strava's appeal. More than just a GPS, Strava shares your rides and runs automatically, so it's really low maintenance. See your rank on your favourite segment, join distance challenges, and follow your friends, pros and even foes. As they say, "If it’s not on Strava, it didn’t happen".

Could use a few refinements

Overall good. Some really simple things could be refined. For instance, pace graph will scale all the way from division by zero (standing still) to 15 minute mile even though my entire run was in between 7:00-8:00 mile - making it hard to see the variation of my pace within they range. Also the smoothing algorithms on the graphs are a bit wonky especially when using 1 second resolution logging from my watch (garmin). Also, on my lap times it says “pace” on the column header and lists pace times but has a bar which is NOT pace - it is speed. Speed and pace are inverse. Never met a runner in the world that speaks in reference to speed and when I reported this I got a really lengthy explanation of why they do it this way - bottom line you missed the mark on this. If you’re going to do it that way, at least label it properly. Put a column header that’s says speed - because it isn’t pace. You can still use the speed data to superimpose onto the heart rate chart (so it correlates like you want it to, instead of inversely correlating to pace) as your rep (clearly not a runner 😂) explained to me.

Other than these minor grips it’s a decent app.

Needs work

I tried Strava a few years ago and didn’t love it. I’ve used several running apps over the years. The one I have used consistently over the last 4 years has been Runkeeper.
I have a few friends on Strava and I thought I’d try it again because I like the social aspect of sharing with friends.
Strava has a lot of nice data and it seems that their paid service revolves more around training plans rather than focused on just giving you more data. This makes sense to me. I really want to like this app!
I use an Apple Watch but also carry my phone. The watch app starts up pretty fast so that’s a plus.
My main issues with Strava is that I have to go to the website in order to add my shoes so I can track the mileage. This seems silly. I can’t find a reason for it. I don’t want extra steps to get the app set up I also have a big issue with the app not showing me two decimal places for mileage. This is beyond silly. It’s just dumb. Runner like stats. We don’t want to have to log on to the website to get info that should be available on the app. Isn’t the entire point of an application to be self contained? The app is good but be aware that setup will take you 10 extra minutes and that viewing stats will be something that you will have to set aside time to do AFTER your run.
