Description
SubShift is free and simple to use.
It has limitations too: SubShift only works with mp4, mov and avi video files and srt subtitle files. These formats have a coverage of over 90% though.

Ratings and Reviews
Limited to MP4
The app looked like it would be perfect for my needs, but I'm starting with .mov files and want to sync the .srt before transcoding.
Good idea but too many issues and limitations
Observations:
1) I had to click on the “movie” and “subtitles” buttons and open the files that way. Dragging files to the window or to the Dock icon, even when the app was already open, didn’t work for me (High Sierra).
2) The app will only adjust ALL timings to the SAME OFFSET (up to plus/minus 180 seconds –see Preferences). If you have a set of subtitles where the beginning and end need adjusting differently (I’d say in about 70% of the cases I encounter) then this isn’t the app for you.
3) Adjusting the playback position by dragging the adjuster under the display results in problems such as the subtitles not appearing. When I advanced to a point past the end of the subtitles the app crashed on me with an out of bounds message saying it had to shut down.
4) I’m surprised that this app can supposedly handle AVI but not MKV. You almost never see AVI these days and MKV is pretty common.
5) It’s nice that it is free but it has too many issues, even when trying to use it on the few files for which I could use it, for me to keep it on my computer.
This is the Very Best app that I’ve used for Syncing subtitles.
It’s intuitive and easy to use, and as long as it’s open it saves your sync so if you’re doing multiple files in a row (like a tv series) then you only have to search to sync the first file then use the existing placement number to do the rest. Way easier than others I’ve tried. Sorry if my terminology is incorrect, just goes to show it’s so easy a novice can use it. Thanks so much to the developer 🙏
