Suggester is a tool to assist in the creation of songs and chord progressions. This app will help you find chords that work together. It is efficient and fun; use it to build musical phrases that will carry emotion through tension and release.

Select chords for their harmonic function. The app makes full use of the roman numeral notation.

Simply touch a chord to hear how it sounds. Press the play button to hear the chord progression sequentially and adjust the playback speed.

You can work either forward or backward:
FORWARD - Pick a scale, then build your song from the chords that the app suggests. That's the quickest way to assemble chords that are compatible.
BACKWARD - From the catalog, pick a set of chords that you like. The app will tell you what scales it matches with. After you have selected the scale you want to use, the app can tell you what chords will fit in with the ones you entered before. That is extremely useful in jam sessions!

Pick chords from our huge catalog. Your exotic chord type is not in the catalog? You can still build it by creating a custom chord.

To spice things up, you can borrow chords from parallel scales.

Explore new territories by using modulation.

Browse the classic chord progressions to find inspiration.

Use Drag and Drop to reorder chords. Hold your finger on an item for a second to start the drag operation. On iPad, you can also drag chords directly from the suggestions to anywhere in your progression.

Tap the note button on the left to change the duration.

Swipe a chord from right to left to delete it.

Export your documents as either a MIDI file or a text file.

Every sound generated with the app is also sent to the MIDI output, configurable in the Options. You can route these notes to another app on your device, an external MIDI port, or remotely to another computer by setting up a MIDI Network Session.

You can trigger chords through the MIDI input.

Use drag and drop between apps! ChordPadX and Suggester can communicate through drag and drop. You can also drag pads and chords into another app if it supports MIDI drag and drop.

Sync up your tempo with other apps with the help of Ableton Link.

In the free version, some of these features are locked. Reach full productivity by purchasing a Full Unlock. You only need to buy it once for all your iOS devices. To unlock your purchase on another device, select "Restore Purchases" in the Options. The macOS version is sold separately.

An Amazing & Essential Songwriting App

I really like Suggester; it’s proven to be an amazing app that has helped me many times when inspiration strikes and I don’t have a piano or a guitar nearby to capture the music I’m hearing in my head. It’s also a great tool to stretch your imagination by experimenting with other chords you might not be hearing in your head but would make for a better song.

Having the ability to send a midi file to Finale, Notion or Logic Pro X is a terrific feature. What would make this already amazing app even better is having the ability to have multiple instruments play simultaneously instead of just the one piano or guitar and/or be able to use (mix) different instruments within the same Suggester file. The piano sounds are excellent. I highly recommend this app. I use Suggester everyday. Great work Mathieu.

Deer hunter with a pow ,

I find this app useful for writing stuff like backing tracks, and other stuff. I wish you could have other instruments/instrument effects, Like the piano and electric piano, so it’s be something like guitar, distortion guitar, chorus guitar, etc. I also wish that instead of hitting just chords, you could add individual notes to your song. So
If I wanna transition between chords for instance , emadd9 and Cmaj7, in between those chords I could add a few individual notes, probably e-d-g-a-c. Also there’s a few scales not on here like melodic minor and it’s modes, and a few harmonic minor modes too. Last thing is that you probably wanna use more complex poly chords. Let’s say I have an am/d poly chord, (which is really an with a d note as the bass) I could use a chord instead of just the note d, so it could be am/dm7, or something like that. So basically what I’m getting at is that we should get the chance to combine 2 (or more) completely different chords

Really good app, minor issues

I really like the spirit of this app and its simplicity. Having the ability to sketch out chord progressions while standing on the subway is invaluable. A few things I would like to be improved. Having the ability to set how many times a section should repeat would make song building easier. Some scales are just incorrect, for example the C minor blues scale is spelled as C D# E# F# G A# rather than the more universally common C Eb F Gb G Bb. The difference is substantial: the second note in the scale is a minor third, not a sharp second; the last note a flat seven not a sharp sixth, etc. I believe most people think about the notes that way, unless I’ve been living under a rock. Similarly, certain chords are spelled with weird enharmonics, for example when in C major, the A7 (as secondary dominant) is spelled A Db E G, but we all know that the second note is a major third, i.e., a C, not a flat four (!). That’s just plain wrong.
