You don't need to pay for anything in order to play / advance.
You reach new levels when you score more points and you can unlock new themes when you collect 100 virtual coins.

You can unlock and play Zen Mode which is not timed, but probably it will be difficult as well for you. :)
Great workout for the brain!
You have to think fast and react fast to succeed in the classic version, but the zen version slows things down enough for you to catch your breath.
