TeachFX is a tool for teachers that automatically visualizes which portions of your class are teacher talk vs. student talk.

Research shows that the more students speak in the class, the more they learn. This finding has been demonstrated over and again by education researchers conducting the decades, including studies by Nicole Holthuis (2012), Sarah Michaels (2008), Elizabeth Cohen (1997), Chaub Leechor (1989), Lev Vygotsky (1978), and several others. In her 1997 study, Julie Bianchini showed a strong positive correlation between an individual’s average rate of talk and his or her learning gains. As Rachel Lotan, the leading researcher on the subject, found: “At the classroom level the average proportion of students interacting on-task was positively related to average learning gains on various measures of achievement. In other words, the more students talked and worked together, the more they learned.”

And yet, in today’s classrooms, teachers talk on average around 75% of class time. This reality, observed by John Hattie (2012) and others, shows that we are a long way from the student-centered classrooms we know are best for learning.

TeachFX helps teachers track their teacher talk and student talk on a daily basis. It uses a machine learning algorithm to separate your voice from your students automatically, requiring no extra work from you or an instructional coach. And in our testing it has proven accurate within 1-2 percentage points. After you analyze your class, the results are processed in a few hours, and you can see those results on the TeachFX mobile app, or on the web.

• Set your goal for teacher talk and student talk, and track your average over time.
• Schedule TeachFX like an alarm clock to analyze your classes automatically. That way, you don’t need to worry about remembering to start and stop the app during the school day.

My name is Jamie Poskin, and I used to teach English and math at a high school in Harlem. I created this app as a way to empower teachers like me with regular feedback on our teaching.

In our beta testing, classrooms where the teacher used TeachFX for just three weeks saw significant increases in the amount of student speech, and teachers report that this change in their pedagogy was driven by their use of the app. You know what they say: what gets measured, gets done!

Opening app starts (and wastes) 7-day free trial

I downloaded the app today to check it out and see if/how I could use it in my classroom. I wanted to become familiar with it before I tried it out in my classroom.

It doesn't tell you that you're activating your tiny 7-day free trial when you're prepping the app. Now I likely won't get to use the app at all during the free trial because we have a 4 day weekend, plus I lost today because I downloaded it at night. That gives me a whopping two days to try out a product that doesn't even give you an after-trial price list.

I'm sure this is a fabulous app. I've heard wonderful things. It's just too bad that they don't tell you ahead of time that opening the app will initiate the trial.
