For those of you just tuning in, we released a major update to the TED app last week, but a few pesky bugs came along for the ride. Since then, we’ve been gleefully stomping on them, but if you find more, please help us by emailing us at contact@TED.com. Here’s what’s happened:
・We fixed a problem where videos downloaded prior to the update were lost after the update; previous downloads are back where they belong.
・A problem where Facebook sign-in would crash the app has been resolved.
・We fixed an issue with Chinese translations.
・Missing topics on Search screen have returned.
・We also made several minor improvements and bug fixes.
Now back to last week’s major update. (Did we mention it was pretty major? It was.) Here’s what it included:
・You can now get personalized recommendations from the TED community right on the home screen.
・Speaking of the home screen, it’s getting a major makeover: you’ll find your latest recommendations, newest and trending ideas, and all our curators’ picks in one place.
・Dark mode is here, and it’s on by default. Enjoy all your favorite TED Talks in a cozy cinematic setting. (No fears, though: light mode is still available if you prefer it.)
・We’ve simplified the app navigation.
・The much-requested “Surprise Me” feature is back. Tap it once to find an idea that will probably blow your socks off.
・In addition to duration, downloaded videos now show file size so you can better manage your device storage.
・On top of that, downloads include all available subtitles, so you can switch languages even when you’re offline.
・Search has been revamped to show more and better results.
・Videos now include even more helpful information, including a brief speaker bio, event data, and a personal recommendation from a member of the TED community.
・The app itself takes up much less space on your device; this means faster installs and updates. And, this new update allows us to push minor updates without requiring a complete update every time we improve something.
・All this, in addition to numerous other minor user interface tweaks and improvements.
As always, we hope you enjoy the TED app. If you run into any issues or have general feedback, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
One last thing: we don't prompt you for a review in the app because we don't want to distract you from all those wonderful, inspiring TED ideas. However, if you’re enjoying the app, please take a moment to rate and review us here in the App Store. Every vote counts!

Still does not download properly
Even with the updated version I can’t get the videos to download successfully for off-line viewing. I have a dozen or so videos supposedly downloaded in my downloads section, but when I am in airplane mode I cannot watch those videos. There’s also no indication regarding the progress of the download. After you click on the download video button, it just shows up in your downloads section. But there’s no indication how much is downloaded. And there’s no way to refresh the download or restart it.
Beware! Download feature does not work well!
Beware! The Download feature does not work well! First, the app does NOT download the video or audio in the background on wifi so you have to make sure you keep the app open! Second (and even worse) when you click on "My Talks" then choose downloads, it will show your talk as being downloaded when in fact it isn't! (the talk has only started to download or is only partially downloaded). This means that you will consume a lot of unplanned bandwidth when you try to view the "downloaded" talk (which may cost you a lot of money) or you won't be able to access it all all if you don't have an internet connection. It's a poorly designed app. They should have a "pending download" section in "My Talks" and enable the app to download in the background when on Wifi. There should also be a progress bar when the talk is being downloaded.
Developer Response ,
Imagine, if you will, one of those "Under new management" signs hung on the TED app. No question it's been a very long time coming, but we've totally revamped the download functionality on the TED iOS app in version 5.7, and we hope you'll come back for another visit.
We've addressed your concern about downloading in the background, so video or audio will continue downloading while the app is closed. We've also added a download progress circle on the talk page, as well as a progress bar within the Downloads folder. When a download finishes, you'll see a banner notification at the bottom of the app. No more un-downloaded videos showing as downloaded! Finally, the pernicious offline playback issue that was affecting many users has been vanquished.
Please let us know if there's any other lingering issues with downloading videos you'd like to see addressed. Thank you very much for keeping us honest!
Tiny fonts, worst search function ever...
I gave this app three stars only because it plays the videos without problems. But the search feature is the worst I’ve ever seen on any app. I wanted to find talks on ‘self trust’. Typing either of those words in varying combinations, including with a comma between, turned up two videos or mostly no results. Of course, typing in ‘trust’ results in about half of the entire Ted library. I literally have to use Google advanced search to find videos I want to watch in my Ted app. Sheesh!
By the way, when I did get a resul from my search in Ted app, the display was so tiny I had to use a magnifying glass to read them, and I’m using an iPad Pro. That lack of scaling in the display is ludicrous.
