Description

Now with Spatial Video, streaming URL support and a tasty new icon from @sdw.

Welcome to Television: a perfect media app for Vision Pro, where you can watch YouTube or anything from your media library on any TV from an ever-growing collection—vintage CRTs to modern day flatscreens you can mount on your wall or float in your space. Now with SharePlay, you can even watch TV with friends.

You won’t believe how good it feels to watch YouTube on a big display of your choice (even Shorts on a tall one), or old clips on TVs from their era. It’s like time travel, but real. This is the future of television. We call it Television.

What’s New

Version 1.5.1

In Television 1.5, we added spatial video support, so even your magical future-y spatial videos will play in regular old TV sets. 3D TV without the glasses. Nice!
Also, we added support for streaming URLs in your player. Why not! Stream yourself silly.

Please clap for our delicious new icon designed by none other than Apple Design Award-winning hero Sebastiaan de With.

Silly fun.

Update: Sandwich’s comment is forcing me to give Television 5 stars. My arm is twisted and I’m looking forward to the future of Television.

Version 1.0 review/comments - now outdated.

Growing up as a little kid in the 1970’s, with Saturday morning cartoons and weekend sci-fi movies on a local UHF channel, I am excited about clunky old tube TVs in Vision Pro. Television the app is not ready for Prime Time. The only videos it seems to play need to be in your Photos library or unprotected video files copied from a computer. There are no streaming services. No iTunes purchases. No MKV file support. If you want to see yourself on a little (or massive) tube TV, this is the app for you. But don’t expect to watch the latest 3D movies. On the technical side, the “close” and “move bar” are always visible killing the immersion. The “move bar” also seems to drift from the TVs I have set up. It might be rotated 90 degrees to the right or it might be missing altogether so you have to force quit it to close. I hope it has a bright future but that future isn’t here. Yet.

Developer Response ,

Hey thanks so much for the feedback, Reid! I was born in '78 so I'm right there with you. And you're so right about limited functionality of 1.0, which we considered the MVP in the same way Vision Pro is an MVP—it points to the future but we're not quite sure what to do about it yet. That's why I'm so excited that 1.1 which was just released has full YouTube support, which will offer hours of fun per day, instead of minutes. Because...there's a lot of stuff on YouTube, and there's a TV in the app that's perfect for everything you could watch. Last night I watched an episode of Welcome Back Kotter on the 80s CRT.

If you'll give us a shot, play with the 1.1 and it delights you more than 1.0, and you'd consider notching up your rating even 1 start, I'd be over the moon. We want to make something you want to use every single time you put on the Vision Pro. Thanks again!

Super fun

Really hope we see some more TV models. This has been a really fun app to use. Would love to see you like the old-school projection style big screen TVs from the 90s maybe even a drive-in movie theme. In general, I think having a number of different television models that get released an update to be really cool.

Not sure what the point is

While I was interested in the app because of sandwich, I found the app to be very lacking in functionality. While the television models are interesting they really don’t serve much of a purpose other than looking sort of neat. The interface itself is somewhat ill considered because it sort of just floats way too high above the control interface (think of A tv mounted about ten feet above the ground). It’s not exactly user-friendly and it doesn’t lend itself well to the spatial computing environment of the Vision Pro. There are a lot of apps out there that simulate an irl viewing experience in a much better, more native way with the Vision Pro.

This is a case where I regret buying on reputation.
