A tens frame is a simple yet very effective tool for playing with numbers up to five, ten and on the iPad up to twenty. This app provides a tens frame and ten counters, five blue and five green.

How could my child use a tens frame? Here are some ideas!

Check that the student can recognise the number of dots on a tens frame card instantly without counting.

Make sure the students understands that the dots plus the spaces equal ten. Practise all the combinations that make ten.

Place all ten dots on the frame and ask the students to imagine taking off some dots. For example, for ten minus six the students imagine six dots removed and see that there are four dots left. Check this by actually removing six dots. This leaves four dots exposed.

Practice all 12 combinations of every basic fact. For example the basic fact 2 + 8 = 10 is linked to all these problems:
2 + 8 = ?           ? + 8 = 10       2 + ? = 10        8 + 2 = ?
? + 2 = 10        8 + ? = 10        10 – 8 = ?        ? – 8 = 2
10 – ? = 2        10 – 2 = ?        ? – 2 = 8          10 – ? = 8

Monster 10 frame

This app allows a student to move tiles to a frame to complete the ten frame or the two ten frames. This means the student is counting on, from whatever they set the frame to hold. That seems to be it. There are no problems provided, such as 6 + ? = 11, and no way to check answers. There is no subitizing practice, which is important. The monsters are cute, but are merely virtual tiles. Hopefully improvements will be made to improve this app - in the meantime, there are free apps that do what this does.

This could work great in the classroom -- except we're limited to 5 + ____ (another number). Currently we're unable to add 6 plus another number because there are only 5 aliens of each color. Change this (i.e.: 10 aliens of EACH color) and this could be a very useful tool for teaching adding and/or subtracting. Note: LOVE the fact that we have the option of hiding the tens frame.

This app can be used by teachers to project. I was disappointed that the description said the counters were purple and blue, but monsters were the only choice. Suggestion....provide red and yellow counters since that is what students will be using and add a writing tool so teachers can circle or write equations.
