Version 4 is terrible
June 9 Update: with the latest update to iOS (ver 11.4), the app now crashes when zooming in on certain pages, such as comics.
First, this is a PAID subscription. We see the ads in the online version of the paper - fine. But now these flashing ads at the bottom of the screen is over the top! They have to go.
Second, navigation is worse. Yes, you swipe to turn the page, but it is worse than before. On the last version, there were translucent buttons you could press to turn the page.
Third, the previous version had a feature where you touch an article it would zoom that article to page-width, which was nice. Now it launches a new window with the article and even more ads. You can still pinch and zoom, but less effective.
Fourth, many of the jump links to the rest of the article on another page do not work. This may be a content creation issue and not the app, but annoying.
Finally, with the toolbar across the top and the ad panel at the bottom, the amount of screen space used is un-acceptable.
They will need to make some changes or I, like others, will be forced to look elsewhere for my paper. Interesting hat I just got my annual renewal in the mail.
Lowering my former two-star review
Many months ago I wrote a two star review. This update? ONE STAR. I wrote customer care AGAIN and they said they’re working with the vendor to resolve the constant and daily crashing, especially when reading the comics. Now there isn’t a day when it won’t crash the paper when enlarging or moving the page, leading us to find our way back to where we left off each time. Clearing the cache in iPad’s Safari in Settings and reinstalling does nothing. Lately, it’s begun crashing on news pages as well. After this long, the fact that they don’t announce the problem publicly and give us updates, leaves us to think that our devices might be faulty, and that is unforgivable. Joyless experience, trying to read the paper each day.
This app is absolutely horrible. The downloading is excruciatingly slow and it frequently crashes. I had no problem with it until two weeks ago. Reporting the issue to the ajc via the contact us on the app has been a total waste of time. The ads load very quickly so this is even more unacceptable.
I am seriously considering cancelling my subscription. I have requested a refund for all the failed issues and am finding the paper equally difficult to deal with via the same contact us drop down. They say I started my subscription through the app and it is an apple issue......I started it via phone through the paper years ago for my lap top.
One star rating because I can not go lower.
