The Dark Index

Know your shelves

Free · In‑App Purchases · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.

The Dark Index is a private-first catalogue for a physical book collection. Scan an ISBN or enter a book by hand, browse what you own, keep TBR and buy intent visible, spot duplicates, and record where each copy lives. Core beta capabilities: - local, offline collection access; - ISBN scanning and manual entry, with book details looked up automatically for scans not already in your library (only the ISBN is sent, to fetch public edition data from Open Library and the Library of Congress — see the privacy policy); - browse and search by collection details; - editable shelf and location names; - duplicate warnings that never prevent collectors from adding another copy; - private notes and collection state; - manual CSV and JSON export; - a dark and a light reading theme, both meeting WCAG AA text contrast. Your Core collection remains readable, editable, and manually exportable without a subscription. This beta does not collect usage analytics and does not upload your collection to a Dark Index service — the only thing ever sent off your device is the ISBN of a book you scan or add, and only to look up its public edition details. The Dark Index catalogues physical books. It is not an ebook reader, audiobook player, social feed, or marketplace.
