Excellent News App
Recently the Economist revised their iPad application creating a new brilliant approach to online news magazines. The New York Times and Washington post web pages now look tired and clunky much like rustic relics. The Economist app functions much like one would expect a magazine to work with pages that 'turn' as the reader strokes from right to left like the Kindle app. I find the ads placement on full pages excellent since they do not clutter the article pages; I actually stop to read the ads now occasionally rather than exploring ways to ignore them on typical web pages. Navigation through the electric magazine requires minimal screen touching. Alternatively the reader can read the magazine from the 'front to back' cover just like a printed magazine. The reading interaction experience is elegant, intuitive, and free from touching gymnastics. The current app is an excellent companion to the world class writing and reporting of the Economist.
Great, but Needs Newsstand
First of all, I know that some people have been complaining about it not recognizing their subscription, but I personally haven't had that problem at all and it does have an in-app announcement in the "user guide" section that acknowledges the problem and asks those people having issues to contact customer support, so it's not like their development team is just ignoring the problem.
Secondly, I have to say that I love this app. They seem to have done a great job recreating the experience of flipping through the pages of a magazine, but still added the conveniences that reading magazines on an ipad allows, such as the ability to zoom in/out and a quick access table of contents that allows you to jump to any article right at the front. The quality of writing is superb as always, and the pictures look great. Overall, I love reading The Economist on my ipad.
The only problem I have is that the app isn't in newsstand, which isn't a huge problem, but I would really like to have all of my magazine apps in one place. If the developers could get the app into newsstand I would say it's perfect, but until then only 4 stars from me.
After so many years still cannot get it right
This application despite numerous updates leaves a lot to be desired. My main grip is its inability to return to the place you last stopped after you quit the application both text and audio. I am an avid fan of the audio edition, as I can focus on other things and still listen to the content, but after recent upgrade the audio stops at the cartoon and forces me to go back to the screen and skip it manually. Also after the screen saver kicks in and on screen controls show on top of it, they do not actually function except for occasional response from the stop button. I wish the application allowed to create a custom audio play list from the selected articles instead of forcing me to listen to the whole content, mind you with occasionally forced glimpse at the cartoon, and making me manually skip articles I am not interested in. On the positive side, I am glad that the audio edition after experimenting with forcing audio listeners to put up with audio ads did away with it, I hope permanently. Don't I pay already for the subscription, precisely so I don't have to have my ears inundated with audio ads?
