Audio Edition is Unusable

I use the app to listen to the audio edition of this weekly publication. Unfortunately, removing the ability to listen at preferred speed (2x) has caused me to abandon the app completely. The only way to listen now is at “normal” speed which sounds like someone on ether trying to “mansplain” the topic to me. It’s truly awful.

Pro tip: get the podcast link from your account page and listen in your favorite podcast app at your favorite speed. The podcast app remembers your preferred speed and doesn’t make you swipe left from an advertiser’s splash page every time you open the app. Less clicks, better experience. I abandoned the app when the ability to select preferred audio speed was removed and am writing this now because I can’t get “The World in 2018” in my podcast app so came back to the app to see if it was fixed. It’s not and I so I’m forced to listen at dumb speed.

To the “The Economist” team behind the app: come on folks, fix this terrible user experience. You’ve lost a user and my eyeballs on your ads because you’ve made a worse experience than for me than older versions of your app. I love the “The Economist” for its excellent reporting and finger on the pulse of current events. Plus, it gives me a great window into the future. Unfortunately, the app does not live up to the quality of the publication. Rather than a window to the future, it feels like a step backwards.

A serious downgrade from the previous version

Update: The first week or so of reviews of this version were appropriately terrible, but now a suspicious flood of 5 star reviews (with no written comments) has magically brought up the average. Don't trust them. No self-respecting Economist reader/listener would rate this version highly. It is a measurable step backward. I eagerly wait for an update where they will correct the numerous problems with this version.

Original review: This is the first review I've ever written about an app. I normally look forward to the upgrade of an app I use a lot like The Economist. I expect a few kinks, but there are usually some good new features to overbalance the inconvenience of adapting to a new interface. Not this time. I've tried to be patient and have emailed tech support to ask about a couple of missed features (no response yet). But I just have to vent a little frustration here. What could they have been thinking with this! The old interface wasn't perfect, but it worked in so many ways that this one doesn't. I primarily use the iPhone app to listen to the audio, and this version really worsens the audio experience. The playlist feature is basically non-functional and the audio controls are not as easily accessible. The design is clunky and awkward. Please just quietly admit the mistake and give us back the old version.

The audio function is going from ok to bad to worse.

The audio system is crappy. First, it used to store data where the track stopped on my phone. Now it needs network connection to pick up where I stopped. Sometimes it takes a minute to resume and sometimes it plays the wrong track from beginning. Second, now if I close the app or the screen is locked for inactivity, the audio stops. I can’t even resume the audio in the lock screen gadget. I have to resume in the app. It is super annoying when I listen to the audio while driving. Third, if I downloaded the audios of section 1 and section 3, but not section 2. After it finishes the last track of section 1, it streams the first track of section 2 instead of playing the already downloaded track of section 3. It used to play the track of section 3 not 2 a few years ago. This change is implemented a few patches back. I hate it. It cost me steaming data and I don’t want to play the audios in section 2.

The download system is not working well neither. Sometimes I downloaded the audios of certain sections of the issue and saw the blue check mark for the section. The next day I found that few tracks are not downloaded, and I have to download again.

I felt the function of this app is going backwards. It is slower and harder to use.
