Editors’ Notes

Pulling you in from the get-go, The Martian: Bring Him Home turns the heart-pounding book and movie into an immersive text adventure. Struggling to survive until he can be rescued, astronaut Mark Watney messages you—a NASA specialist—for help. Your advice (aided by a team of colleagues) will keep him alive—or doom him forever. Fun twists and witty dialogue ensure the game is every bit as compelling as the story it’s based on.

So, I loved both the book and the film. I could not walk away from either. As soon as I got my Apple Watch, this app popped up as a recommended app for the watch, and I immediately downloaded it.

Problem. I accidentally killed Watney. I backed up a few steps to figure out where I went wrong. However, even though I’ve gone back and corrected my mistake, his vitals are still showing as flatlined on my Watch. Going to try to uninstall the Watch app and then reinstall to see if that helps. Love this game, though.

I haven't heard from Mark in three days.

Lots of issues. I'll get a "message from Mark," then the game will say Mark is unavailable. This lasts for hours until he finally comes back for two minutes. Then he's gone again and I'm left wondering if I should trust the next notification. This app has given me trust issues.
Also, the dialogue choices, for the most part, don't impact anything. There are one or two important choices, while the rest are basically saying the same thing. I might as well be reading the book, which I spent less money on than this app.
One last thing: I apparently made him go deaf in the game, but he still talks about listening to music... however that works. It's also aggravating that the app requires you to google or flip through the book to find the correct answers to some of his questions. Why not provide the answers in messages from NASA?? Am I the only human capable of looking something up?
Also, there's no option to flirt with Mark. C'mon now. He's played by Matt Damon.
If you're obsessed with the book and movie like me, by all means, buy this app. Just expect lots of issues and be committed. If you're just looking for something casual to play, I can direct you to Pokémon GO.
