Encounter superb works of art in an intimate setting at The Phillips Collection, one of the world’s most distinguished museums of modern and contemporary art. Located in Washington's vibrant Dupont Circle neighborhood, the Phillips opened to the public in 1921 as America's first museum of modern art.
Paintings by Renoir and Rothko, Bonnard and O'Keeffe, van Gogh and Diebenkorn are among the many stunning impressionist and modern works that fill the museum's distinctive building, which combines extensive new galleries with the family home of its founder, Duncan Phillips. The collection continues to develop with selective new acquisitions, many by contemporary artists, and the Intersections series features projects by contemporary artists, responding to art and spaces in the museum.
The Phillips Collection app lets you explore this exceptional collection of modern and contemporary art through audio tours and multimedia presentations. Visitor information, a calendar of events, and maps of the museum help you to plan your visit, navigate the collection, and learn more about the art you discover.

Download problem solved
I had trouble completing the full download. I was able to determine that is was the active VPN on my phone that was preventing the complete download. While the app manufacturer had stated that the VPN was “dormant” while on wireless, it must not have been the case. Once I turned that app off, the full download of this app and two other apps was able to happen successfully.
Terrific app for a great museum
This is a terrific museum app. It contains a substantial selection of art works including many not currently on display, which is a wonderful feature. The Phillips is one of my favorite museums so I was delighted to find that there is an app for it. Browsing through the artworks is a real pleasure. And when I am getting close to a Washington DC visit, it is great to be able to quickly check the schedule in the app to see what's on.
My only quibble is that the app seems to be locked in portrait mode. I don't know what back-end development is required, but most art apps let you change the orientation to see landscape works in landscape. It is a recurring disappointment as I keep trying to turn the device to change the picture orientation but it doesn't work in this app.
Update: OK, it seems that when you are looking at a picture in slideshow mode you can turn it sideways.
It doesn't seem like you can genuinely browse. There's a very short list of top picks. Beyond this you have to search with search terms. No list of artists to browse through, for instance, or categories, which would make it hard to discover art you don't know.
