Track temperatures from Signals, BlueDOT, and Smoke Gateway on your smart device.
BlueDOT utilizes your smart devices' Bluetooth to receive information with a communication range up to 95-feet line-of-sight. You can connect up to 6 BlueDOT devices to ThermoWorks BBQ app to set alarms, track min/max, and collect graph data.
Smoke Gateway connects to the internet via Wi-Fi to transmit and store information in the cloud. This allows ThermoWorks BBQ app to review your temperatures, receive alerts, and view graph data from anywhere.
Signals uses both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, which allows for easy setup and different modes of connecting to Signals, so you can track your cook in any situation. Bluetooth allows you to connect directly to your phone or tablet, up to 95-feet line-of-sight, so you can use Signals if there is no internet connection. Wi-Fi allows you to track your cook through the internet and cloud from anywhere. Signals switches automatically between the two to give you the best experience.
You can connect multiple Signals, Smoke Gateway, and BlueDOT devices to ThermoWorks BBQ app simultaneously, giving you an overall dashboard of your temperatures.

Plenty of room for improvement
Signals is marketed for competitors and backyard enthusiasts alike, who want to elevate their game to the next level of BBQ. Importantly, unlike perfectly capable ‘dumb’ probes, the Signals system is intended for gadget geeks who love the tinkering and the data provided by ‘smart’ devices. This app does not do the hardware any justice. It is very bare-bones with hardly any features. And of the features (e.g. save/export readings, real-time display of temps), it again, is overly simplified and does not have visualization options, note-taking, meta-data incorporation (i.e. pit description, wood/pellet use, food-item parameters, etc.)) that other competing companion apps (and hardware) bundle. This is truly disappointing for an amazing set of probes and hardware. Thermoworks should recognize that many of their customers interact with their Signals product predominantly through the app (hence the whole point of Bluetooth and Wi-fi capability). In this regard, the quality of the app MUST be approved since it has the potential to give the greatest impact on overall product delight. This is a tragedy of not knowing customer demographics and a lost halo effect opportunity.

There has been heavy investment on our software side of things. We are listening to our customer's feedback and are working as quickly as possible to make the software match our customer's expectations.
This is the worst App I have ever used. There is nothing ‘pro’ about it. It has the look and feel of something that was designed as a high school project. Completely amateurish. Not something you would expect from an established company like Thermoworks. The recent updates have not fixed any of the issues I have experienced. List of problems: Bluetooth connectivity is unreliable, does not save wifi password between uses, usually have to change settings 3 or 4 times before the base unit saves it, you cannot adjust high/low alarms on the temperature control unit (fan) it’s factory set to +-25 degrees, consistently losses signal and when you reconnect the graphing information is reset (meaning your information is lost), on reconnection it has a habit of reverting to previous temperature setting and not your current desired settings (this is the most aggravating glitch). For an example if you are cooking ribs at 225 and going about your day, your phone drops connection and then reconnects without your knowledge the controller resets to your previous cool temp of 275. An hour goes by you check your ribs that are now dried out garbage. There is no alarm because the alarms reset to 275 as well. This exact thing has happened to me multiple times. Save your money and buy another BBQ controller, there are several good ones out there. This App completely ruins Thermoworks product.
Learning Curve and Missing Some Features
Coming from FlameBoss 2 unit, I wanted to move to Thermoworks for the quality in brand. I’m doing so, the physical unit seems to be pretty well made - along with the Billows fan. The app is definitely the weak point here. The navigating feels clunky, you can’t see the fan output %, the whole look feels like a bit dated. If I’m being honest, I would suggest Thermoworks spend the money on a pro developer, look at features from other brands and get client feedback, and rebuild the app. The unit itself seems solid so far, and with a killer app it would be a no-brainer to recommend to friends and family.
Edit: I have seen a few Dev responses about “working on the software” but haven’t seen any sort of additional information. I love Thermoworks’ other products, but there is serious competition out there with FlameBoss, DigiQ, Fireboard 2, etc. I think it would be in good interest if the company shared some more info on the changes they are making.
