When recording observations the last thing you want to be doing is looking down at your device, struggling with typos, entering times.
Timestamped Field Notes allows efficient note taking; time-stamping each entry as you make it. Simply tap buttons to record the most commonly recorded events (or most used words), significantly reducing the need for typing. Fallback to the keyboard only when required.
Export your notes in chronological order by exporting to cloud storage as CSV, JSON or plain text.
Timestamped Field Notes supports timestamps to minutes or to seconds; configurable to display and/or export seconds (although they are always stored in case you change your mind.) Dates and/or Times can be exported.
Note: Initially developed for monitoring nesting Peregrine Falcons (recording audibles, location activity, territory behaviors) this application can be configured for other time-stamped note taking endeavors:
- Behavioral Event Recording (wildlife species, human subjects; students/teachers/patients/other.)
- Personal well-being journal or daily notes log.
- Marking key time points in interviews for easier post production (e.g. video editing.)
- Interview note taking.
Timestamped Field Notes supports multiple keyword sets.
Configuration options (see "Manage" / "Configure Application / Settings" ) for:
- Enable search across events and/or notes.
- Group events by date/time (e.g. group by month.)
- Group notes by date/time (e.g. group by hour.)
- Refresh on latest platform.

How do you change experiment?
If you remove all events recorded, cannot go back to note taking since you have to tap on an event to do that and you have deleted them.!?! Finally got to use the other set of keywords for my new experiment after a lot of random fumbling, deleting old set of keywords which still appeared in note taking, killing and restarting the app many times until whatever I wanted somehow appeared such as the new set of keywords. Looks like not-ready-for-prime-time app. Very high maintenance to figure out. No documentation to help in the hard stuff to do. Too bad, once I gyrated the app, tortured myself, cursed oh so many times, I got to where I needed to be and it worked wonderfully for my on-going data collection. Will not use it after this experiment . Maybe if I kill it and re-install from scratch (pretty lame)... recommended for one time use if you configure perfectly out of the box (unlikely). Get to work developing guys, you offer something quite useful. Please make it a grownup app rather than a disposable toy.
Developer Response ,
If you delete all events you can add a new one using "+" on the events screen. I don't recommend deleting events, merely exporting them, but you can if it feels cleaner.
If you press "+" on the main screen you can start a new event with any of the keyword sets, which should be what you need.
Sorry the app didn't give you a good experience. I'll keep reading your feedback and see if I can improve things for new users.
Here is the documentation. Next release will link to this from the application:
What a time saving and efficient app! I've been using this app to observe and script classroom observations. The time stamped notes give me the opportunity to record the live action without the constant reminder to watch the clock or stress over calculating the timing of any activity. Accuracy of the timing of each action during the observation is documented. The quick buttons allow me to use frequent words without typing them out, which saves time. I am also able to correct spelling and edit once the observation is complete. I email the script to myself and the teacher. Never again will I have to worry about the date and time when scripting observations.
Excellent app, great support
The idea is simple and ingenious, yet there is no other app like this. This app is an enormous asset for behavioural observations. Especially the fully customizable shortcut buttons, which are easily imported and exported, make it a very practical tool. This is also why the app can be useful in any other given context.
The developer was very forthcoming when I asked for an added feature and implemented it right away. I use this app on a daily basis to conduct research on groups of primates and it has become invaluable for the work in my lab already. Thanks!
With Family Sharing set up, up to six family members can use this app.
