Todoist: To Do List & Calendar
Ratings & Reviews
A note to start off with, from the most recent update: I’m having a small bug with trying to reorder a list of tasks with many subtasks, it won’t put it where I release it, only at the bottom of the list. I may have just overstuffed the tasks ;pThis is great for someone who just needs to dump everything out of their head and sort it, and has many good features for organizing it. For the free version, since there’s no reminders, it’s easy to forget to check off things, but a more important addition would be to add start dates instead of only end dates. Right now, if I want something to automatically come up, I have to set the due date and have it become overdue, in order to bring up a project for a later date, instead of saying “I want to start this on the 13th and be done by the 20th” or whatever. Being able to block out time automatically, and maybe have a system like Skedpal that has time maps so you don’t overschedule yourself and can set boundaries for you working hours, that would make this perfect. Basically, add in durations/start times for things instead of just due dates, and maybe add time blocking so you can tell yourself when you -can’t- work, and I’d definitely go premium. Todoist is one of the more affordable subscriptions and I’d just love a few more things before I could commit to paying. But otherwise, keep up the nice work, the recent update helps a lot, and finally having the ability to duplicate tasks is fantastic.
If you’re just looking for an app to help you plan your garage cleaning and family vacation there are better looking and simpler options out there. If you need an app for professional use, where due dates and times are not merely “goals” (yeah I’m looking at you “GTD” method) but are actual real world cannot be missed deadlines, this is the app. If you need an app that allows you to have those dates appear in your calendar (your calendar, not just the app’s upcoming forecast of events) this is your app (the Fantastical 2 way sync is killer). If you prefer not to spend more time trying to figure out how to do things in the app than actually doing them (did anyone say “Omnifocus“) this is the one. Collaboration, ability to easily add notes and attachments on both the project and task level, straightforward interface, relatively easy to learn functions with good web documentation, TEMPLATES (a feature that for some inexplicable reason other apps seem to openly resist adding but is a no-brainer for those who have the same task and deadline structure for multiple projects, like I don’t know pretty much anyone who is in business and/or works with standardized contracts), sub-tasks, multiple reminder options, this one does it right. You will not see the benefit of the forgoing without the premium subscription, but $38 a year is a bargain for the features and functionality you get.

I really have loved this app, but I need to be able to schedule projects and reminders to try to help as I am permanently disabled and am trying to market my art on a PT basis. Right now, I am one senior citizen living alone, and paying close to $50 a year for these basic functionalities unfortunately makes the app unfeasible for me. If my finances were to significantly improve as a result of using those added features to functionality, I absolutely would be able and willing to pay a yearly subscription fee as well as would likely evangelize them all over the Internet as in the past I have blogged, written articles and done projects with major sites like Fitness Magazine, Coping with Cancer, Lifehack, and more. Now I am disabled and trying to regroup and revisit some of these creative abilities (art and writing, especially), and I really need those functionalities of projects and reminders. I was disappointed when, on my previous review the developer responded, inviting me to contact him to see how he could help, only for there to be no response when I did so and even said I am willing to provide proof of Social Security Disability. This is a great app, but unfortunately some basic functionality is simply too cost-prohibitive for a disabled senior citizen trying to find a way to climb up. Maybe someday.

It’s remarkable to me ToDoist isn’t ranked higher on the productivity charts because it easily eclipses anything that I’ve ever used before. It’s gorgeous (I prefer dark mode, but there are more themes) It integrates great with the GTD methodology (my preference) but whatever your system, it’s robust enough that you should be able to integrate it well. I love what they did with Karma, their gamified point system (but I would like to see this expanded). You can tell that the creators stay up-to-date on best practices and they regularly update a pretty informative blog that is enjoyable for a productivity junky like me. I used it for 24 hours and pretty much decided I NEEDED premium which is easily the best $3 I spend every month. It’s important to distinguish between what this is and is not though. It does not teach you how to be productive. It is not a good place to do high level goal setting, visioning, and planning. It is not a calendar. It also doesn’t focus you on the task at hand. The app is a Task Filing System. It is a utility that will enhance your workflow with those other things. It will work great for anyone who needs to make a to-do list, but those who chose to educate themselves on actual task management theory will get the most out of it. I hope it hits the top of the charts!
Update: after using this app for a month, I have started to realize why I hate it so much. I work more than 80 hours a week. I run a business and a nonprofit. I am always busy, but usually with putting out fires. It is the nature of my work. People call me when they need help right away. I can’t really say, “Let me enter that task into ToDoist and get back to you eventually.” If I dont help people fast, they won’t need my help later. I get stuff done all the time, but my ToDoist list sits there nagging me, saying, You have outstanding tasks. The app gives me no credit for the crises I managed. If I had a life where my work load was predictable even a week in advance, this app would be much more useful. Why doesn’t this app try harder to help someone like me, who’s day always changes with the next phone call or email? I can’t be the only one in this situation. I am having more success with this app than I have had with similar apps. However, when it tries to help out by using natural language to do what you want, it often makes things harder. If I want to have an item on my to do list like prepare for Sunday, it keeps trying to put it on Sunday’s tasks. Also, I still have no idea where things are, and can only find them by random chance. For example, I want to look at the things I have done, and I have no idea where that folder is, even though I’ve been there before. I’m using it, but I can’t say I like it.
Developer ResponseHello, thanks for sharing your experience. When you type "prepare for Sunday" and if the Sunday is highlighted, you can tap on it to remove the recognition. We recommend checking out our Getting Started article: https://todoist.com/help/articles/get-started-with-todoist-OgNNJR as it may help to have a better understanding of where things are 😊
Hi!! I wanted to leave a review because I absolutely love this app. It’s been really helpful and easy to use / integrate into my daily routine. I’ve streamlined my work and personal routines, using the app to help me prioritize items and remember to do things. Being in the software realm, I do have some feature recommendations, too 🙃:- An “end of day” for projects option: like the end of a regular comes, I would like to set an end of day for work related tasks/projects. My recommendation stems from being able to reschedule items as easily at the end of my workday as it is at the end of the real day. I tend to be a little over ambitious with my work tasks… - An option to hide certain items until a future time: I like to put weekly items (specifically meetings and other weekly tasks) into my work project. I like seeing my open “tasks”, but I don’t want to see these weekly items once I’ve completed them for next week because that clutters up the board. I end up only displaying things a week at a time to adjust for this (and then periodically setting the view for a longer term to check on things), but it would be awesome to see more of my long term items or things that I plan to do later in the board without weekly (or daily) clutter.

I’ve been using Todoist for several years now. I have ADHD, full disclosure, and this app is a lifesaver. I started using it just with work - juggling so many projects, follow ups, and stupid tedious tasks was (still is) impossible for me to keep track of. I never used paper planners consistently 😭 Routine is the #1 thing I struggle with. I come back to Todoist everyday because I gotta keep my karma and streaks going 🤣 my current streak is 107 weeks (I forgot to turn todoist vacation on before my current streak and I cried when I came back!) Slowly, I began incorporating personal tasks - budget, wellness, some of those goal check-ins, reminders to schedule a doctor appointment and send birthday cards. Pretty much every facet of my life is touched by Todoist now. Its also enabled me to be goal-oriented…something I never thought I’d say.Because Todoist is helping me track all categories of my life, I can set tasks and recurring things that will push the pin of my goals a little further each week or month. Fast forward to today, Im beginning to introduce Todoist to my team - and we’re creating a team in it! Im excited to not have to remind my coworkers to water their office succulents anymore 🤣 we have a recurring task and reminder for that!
Developer ResponseHello! Thank you very much for sharing such a wonderful review with us. We truly appreciate it and have shared it with everyone at Doist 🙏 Thank you for using Todoist and recommending it to your team 🤗
I’ve tried so many different to-do apps and this one works for my specific criteria. 1 - I like to bullet list my to-do items. This makes it super simple to work off a simple bullet list or take it further and get down into the weeds with reminders, projects, ect. Basically you can go as complicated or as simple as you want. 2 - It works across my iOS, Mac and PC. This is huge. I maintain a robust excel tracker during the day and I can very quickly add items to Todoist which syncs across all my devices. 3 - Syncing across my calendar and inviting my wife to a separate project is incredibly easy. 4 - Easy to change priorities and dates. Life happens and we don’t always get to everything we think we will do in a day. It’s too easy to push less important tasks to a later date. I love how flexible this app is. Too many apps want to lock you into a certain ecosystem (i.e. apple only) or force you to conform to using the app a certain way. If you don’t want to use the markdown features, shortcuts, projects or boards then you don’t have to. I use it for absolutely everything now. Everyone in my life now knows if it’s not on my “list” then it’s not going to happen. Worth every single penny.
Developer ResponseHello! Thank you so much for sharing such detailed positive feedback. We really appreciate it. Thank you for the love! 🤗
It’s a great app, and maybe this is just me, but I wish there was a way to x-out things you didn’t get to and receive negative points for them, rather than having to reschedule them for another day, or worse, check them off even though you haven’t done them. It’s a mental thing, but a big one. Let me give you an example. I hate exercising. Hate it. So of course it’s on my Todoist list of daily chores. But, at the end of the day last week I didn’t exercise because I didn’t feel well or feel like it. Now, what I wanted to do was x that off my list, like “see, you don’t get the satisfaction of marking it complete! And you get negative karma points! Don’t do it again!” So that I’d be motivated to complete it the next day. But instead I was forced to either a) check it complete even though I’d skipped it or b) reschedule it (but since it was a reoccurring event, it didn’t need to be rescheduled). I tried to find a way to x-it but all I could do was delete it and then re-make the task. Not what I was looking for. So, I hesitantly marked it complete, knowing this was bad for my mental game. As expected, the next time I skipped it it was much easier to hit the “complete” check and pretend I’d done it. And then it got easier and easier. And soon, the tasks that I hated I simply checked off like I’d done them, because there was no way to say I hadn’t. A small thing. A simple thing. Obviously my mental game should be better. But it’s not and it’s why I got a to-do app in the first place, and I wish it held me more accountable when I failed because I need all the help I can get.
My college is almost all online this year. I tried doing my normal paper planner and it just wasn’t working! I just got a MacBook so i decided to look up planning apps on there and see what was available. This one came up with good reviews so i decided to give it a try! After I looked up how to add repeated tasks it completely changed my life! With online classes they usually follow the same weekly format so being able to repeat that is amazing! I went from stressed and overwhelmed about online classes to feeling really motivated and under control. I love how I can have it on both my MacBook and my iPhone and it shows the same stuff! My only few suggestions are that on the iPhone widget, you have to open the app each time you want the tasks to show up in the morning, or if I checked stuff off on my MacBook i have to open the iPhone app for it to “catch up.” I wish the widget just did that automatically! For the laptop app the only real flaw i’ve had with it is that repeating tasks only show up once on your upcoming schedule (the next occurrence) until you check them off. i wish the repeated tasks showed up repeatedly! Lastly, sometimes I end up moving tasks to earlier from their scheduled days to accommodate for other plans. Then, when I check them off on the earlier day I moved them to they'll show back up as the next occurrence being the originally scheduled day and I have to check them off again for the week. For example, if I move a task from Wednesday to Tuesday and finish it on Tuesday, then it’ll show back up on Wednesday for me to check off again. It can get confusing sometimes! But those are really little things that don’t affect my overall use of the app. It really has has an amazing effect on my productivity and I highly recommend it!
Developer ResponseHi, thank you for sharing this! Great to hear :)As for the iOS widget issue, can you submit a ticket so we can assist you? Please also tell us the exact schedule of that recurring task and how exactly you reschedule it so we can check if it is intended or not!
