What is Toki Pona?

Sonja Lang created the language Toki Pona in the year 2001. Her aim was minimalism. Toki Pona consists of only about 120 words, which are not altered. In accordance with the position in the sentence, the words can vary their significance. To describe more detail you have to combine words.

It is not the goal of Toki Pona to describe complex issues. Dissertations and scientific papers will never written in Toki Pona. Lawyers, bureaucrats, theologians and politicians are warned of the side-effect of this language.

It is not the aim of Toki Pona to solve the communication problems in the world. But you can learn this language in a month. Toki Pona is easy in an intelligent way and yoga for the brain. People who hate nested subordinate clauses and commas will certainly have fun with Toki Pona.

Very good

This is definitely one of the best apps to learn toki pona out there. It starts you off with pretty easy basic concepts, but quickly gets easier, till already after just 2 days I’m already translating full sentences. I’ve been intentionally trying to read stuff in toki pona (mostly just people talking on discord and Reddit) for a while but this really let me grasp it. My only complaint is that I sort of wish there was more time to learn concepts, or maybe review easier, since sometimes I feel like I finish a section before I fully grasp all the words, but overall pretty good. Also, you can tell that they’ve responded to reviews that other people had made, such as someone who said they should add a dictionary, and they now have an easy to use dictionary at any time. I also kinda wish I could learn sitelen pona without paying money, but I know they have to make money somehow. Sina pona tawa ilo ni!

Amazingly Helpful

I am using this app in conjunction with the “12 days of toki pona” video series, and the app has boosted my ability to learn considerably! The flashcards and quizzes are extremely helpful for memorization, and helps guide you to build sentences with proper structure. I fully recommend this app to anyone wanting to learn toki pona, and you will likely learn faster if you combine it with the video series. Thank you developers!

It’s the best we’ve got

There aren’t a lot of toki pona learning apps on the market so…for having no competition, I’d say this one is pretty good. And the dictionary is a really great and fast lookup tool. Just a few gripes: 1, Training modules don’t have descriptions or previews, so you have no idea what you’re buying. 2, there’s no bundle deal if you want to buy all the Training content at once. 3, some of the “Tips and Notes” sections have typos or don’t make a lot of sense (even if you have an English degree). 4, the definitions in the Vocabulary sections only have the adjectival form, so you have to guess what the other forms mean (or look it up). 5, some of the quiz questions give away the answer (e.g. by including the word in the definition).

All in all, I’m in day 4 of learning toki pona and I know two thirds of the vocabulary so I’m happy. Ni li pona tawa mi.
