Editors’ Notes
Food waste is one of the great challenges of our time. Too Good to Go is one way to contribute to a solution. The app provides an overview of shops and restaurants in your area that have surplus food. Those outlets put together a surprise bag at a lower price, and you can order it right within the app. This way, you can protect the environment and discover new places at the same time.
Stoned listening to Christmas music in September
Yes I know I'm early for listening to Christmas music but it's vinyl and it's like 1950s/60s music so it's whimsical and whatever. I don't have to explain myself.
So anyway, I saw someone talk about this app on TikTok and I was also stoned then so because I thought it was so cute I downloaded the app immediately. I perused through the shops and pretty much everyone of them was sold out except for one. (I think that's a conspiracy but we don't have time for that. This review is already too long). The sweet treat shop I spent $6 at was by my old apartment so when I went to pick up my order and I was surprised to see how many things I got; at least $20 worth of treats and sweets. And these sweets were good. I didn't eat em all at once cuz I didn't want a tummy ache but the chocolate flavored cheese cake and the half a vanilla chocolate swirl brownie I had was the bomb.
I already reserved my next pick up. I'm hooked on this app. Perfect for frequent stoners but also I feel like this is something that could support the unhoused community well. Now I'm ranting. But something to think about, I guess.
Good, But App Could Be Improved
This is a great service that helps to fight food waste. It’s also a nice way to discover businesses in your area that you might not have known about and sample their offerings. However, the app itself could use some improvement.
One issue is that there are some points in the day when the data in the app fail to load and you are stuck at looking at the animated Too Good To Go logo in a white box - sometimes this occurs in the middle of the night but I have also seen it take place during the middle of the day. I hope this never happens to me when I’m going to pick up an order and need to show it to someone in a store and swipe in the app to collect.
Another issue is that the distances shown in the map are straight line (or “as the crow flies”) and don’t take into account the street grid or bodies of water such as rivers. While this approach might work fine for some areas it isn’t best suited for a dense urban environment where there are numerous businesses. Even when I have the filter set to the minimum 1 mile distance I see locations that are actually much further away because they would first require walking to a subway station or to a ferry landing to cross a river. I have found that it’s easier to judge distances by looking at the “Map” view instead of the “List” view under the “Browse” option, but there is no “Map” view available under your “Favorites”.
