Tot is an elegant, simple way to collect & edit text across your Mac, iPhone, and iPad. It’s your tiny text companion!
⁕ Less Is More
Tot’s single window design and simple formatting controls mean no more hunting for that chunk of text. Seven color-coded dots let you organize your notes while keeping them from getting out of hand.
⁕ Dark / Light Mode
Designed to look stunning both day and night, Tot takes full advantage of iOS and macOS themes.
⁕ Small Footprint
Stays out of the way on the desktop with minimal chrome and can even be controlled via the Menu bar. On mobile, each dot is just a swipe away.
⁕ iCloud Sync
Seamlessly syncs your text across iOS and macOS using iCloud so you can capture thoughts wherever you are.
⁕ Markdown Support
Full support for rich or plain text and even automatically translates text to Markdown for handy use on the web. Have an RTF file you need marked up? No problem!
⁕ Killer Keyboard
Tot puts common text operations on the keyboard and keeps track of word and character counts as you type.
Tot takes accessibility seriously with affordances for color blindness and full support for VoiceOver.
Available for iOS and macOS.
• Dot defragger: compacts dots to keep things clean and organized:
- Cleans up dots by moving full ones to the left and empty ones to the right
- iOS: Use “Compact Dots” in share sheet (or tap & hold on share icon)
- macOS: Use Window > Compact Dots… (or ⇧⌘D)
• AutoList will only remove bullets if they are in the middle of a list [Thanks Ian!]
• Fixed check for 100,000 characters: deleting text no longer triggers the alert
• If the first paragraph of a dot is mostly Arabic or Hebrew, the text will automatically switch to using a Right-to-Left writing direction [Thanks Ezra!]
• In plain text, ⌘B and ⌘I inserts a single Markdown character without a selection (this previously only worked with selected text)
• New symbol picker added to status bar:
- Click on the asterisk to get a popover with symbols
- Pick a bullet to start a new list, Emoji to add status, or any other symbol
- A quick alternative to ⌃⌘Spacebar
• Fixed sample text at first launch

The app you need (but don't know you need)
I rarely leave reviews, but this little app deserves praise. I ran into this by mistake, downloaded it and forgot about it. I opened it the other day just to see what it was about and haven't closed it since. I had no idea I even needed this, but it is unbelievably handy!
I am a researcher and writer, and I have numerous writing apps for organizing and writing. I didn't know what I really needed was a quick note-taking app for snippets and passages that can function as both a holding pen for stuff that needs permanent filing and a quick-file for stuff I need at my fingertips.
Aside from the infinite uses for this app, the aesthetics and functionality are on point. I appreciate the time the developer put into this app. It works flawlessly and is carefully designed to be customizable but not overly so.
This is one of those apps you can't work without once you have it. It really should be a part of the mac ios.
Thank you for a great app!
Near-perfect tool for a linchpin job
I've been using this app for about 3 days and I feel like my digital life has been transformed. Gone are the myriad anonymous TextEdit windows that used to litter my screen. When I need to write something down or take quick notes, I know where to go, and when I need those notes, I know where to find them; and I don't lose my place in whatever I was working on in the meantime. It's beautiful to look at and the UI is well thought out. I love this app.
I bought the $20 iPhone version immediately and suggest you do too if you can afford it, because this free app is worth some bucks.
Anything not perfect? Maybe. I'd like to see a LITTLE more Markdown support (not too much!), and I'd like to be able to make the windows a LITTLE bigger (not too much!). But these are quibbles and new features are still appearing, so who knows what the next few weeks will bring.
Didn't know I needed this!
Fantastic little app which has quickly become indispensable - so much so that I bought the $20 iOS app, so I have it wherever I go (and to support the devs!).
There are plenty of notes apps - but something about having this one in the menubar, instantly summoned with a keyboard shortcut and with a limited number of color coded notes just meshes with how my brain works.
I use it for a to-do, shopping list, fitness diary, jotting down a temporary note before transferring somewhere more permanent - and each of those tasks has a single, defined place in Tot.
Syncing with iOS seems rock solid, and editing on iOS is also great.
It's probably not within the scope of the app, but I would love to be able to insert images - e.g. when I am jotting down notes on an experimental protcol at work or a recipe at home, I'd like to be able to insert quick snapshots as I go. Might not fit with the minimal aesthetic though. Likewise with insertion of tables (or even support of markdown tables)
Some of the formatting is a bit weird - for example, bold text is always the color of the "dot". I would prefer if bold text on the first line was colored, but black on any other line - so the first line serves as the title.
Overall, I love it and would highly recommend installing (after all, the Mac app is free!!).
