It’s important for young students to form mental images of number patterns. If students use manipulatives (e.g., blocks, beads, etc.), they are more likely to rely on counting ones than on mental imagery. Subitizing is “instantly seeing how many.” It is the ability to visualize a small amount of objects and know how many there are without counting. It is what tells you what number you roll on a six sided dice. Subitizing is a fundamental skill in the development of young children’s understanding of numbers. Preschool and kindergarten teachers should incorporate activities that strengthen this capability in their young students.
Trip’s Treasures was developed by our team of highly-qualified researchers, speech-language pathologists, learning specialists, and teachers to create a fun, engaging game that enhances innate subitizing skills that are the foundation for math proficiency.
