Cop in your car
This app is like a cop in my car riding along.
You are more attentive to speed and the speed limits. I don’t know yet how accurate the app will report your results, I had an event stopping at home. I didn’t stop suddenly or any thing else. So that could be something you can’t do anything about correcting on your driving behavior. I don’t mind using the App to save on my auto insurance, I hope it does work out well, I think it will for me. I kind of enjoy using the app.
I used the Truelane app for 180 days to try to get a discount on my insurance, I am a careful driver and had very few incidents, only 3 minor braking for such minor incidents I couldn’t even remember them..no sudden stops, On the last day of the 180 it said I would get a 25% discount. The next day, when it would tell you your discount, I tapped on “see your discount” and it gave me only a 10% discount, with no explanation. The app drains your phone battery and I would never have put up with it for 6 months if I thought it would basically renege on its offer. Seems dishonest to me.
Update: Hartford rep responded that there is a bug in the app that causes this problem. It did show the correct discount after several days. However, I had called Truelane tech support right after noticing the problem and they made no mention of the bug. They said only Customer service could help me. Then called Customer. They also said nothing about a bug. They were unable to tell me what my discount would be and said only Truelane knew. So it would be great it the two got together and could let everyone know about the bug in advance...and didn’t keep bouncing customers back and forth. Hopefully the app will be fixed soon.
Developer Response ,
Please check your app again for your renewal discount. There is a known bug where the renewal discount defaults to 10% but returns to the appropriate discount after a few days. This issue will be fixed in our next release.
I was led to believe that the TruLane knew the speed limit where I was driving. Not true. I have received speeding events when driving the interstate highway near where I live. When driving the posted speed TruLane counts it as an event (speeding). I had driven the same stretch of interstate earlier the same day at the same speed going in the opposite direction with no events recorded. They also admit I could be driving above the speed limit in the town where I live with no events recorded. It is much more dangerous to be speeding in town than on an interstate. Does not seem to be a reliable way to track driving performance. Without the ability to determine local speed as my gps used to do it is a totally worthless app. The insurance company should find a different company to use for tracking. Apparently, according to the representative I spoke with, the company has set an arbitrary allowed speed and it doesn’t matter where I am as long as I don’t go over that speed - legal or otherwise, in town or on the interstate.
