Tunebook is now identical to the Tunebook for iPad application - don't buy both! I keep both on the App Store because it's not possible to provide an upgrade path to a single app without forcing some users to pay twice.
Tunebook is a viewer for music expressed in the ABC format. ABC is a simple text-based notation for music and many thousands of tunes are freely available in this format on the Web. ABC is also supported by many music applications. See http://abc.sourceforge.net/ for more details on the ABC format. The format is primarily geared towards traditional folk music where tunes fit on a single page.
Tunebook allows you to import files in the ABC format from websites into its database. You can then list the tunes, search for tunes by words in the title, by key and by time signature. Selecting a tune will display it in musical notation and allow you to play it in a variety of voices. You can also create tunebooks to organize your tune collection.
Tunebook is based on the well-known abc2ps and abc2midi applications, and licensed under the GPL. The source code is available from http://www.jhlabs.com/tunebook.
Fixed the internal Web browser hanging on bookmarked sites which don't use HTTPS.

App works well and is mature. The ability to search and find tunes on the web is great.
But in this day and age I assume that whatever I do on my phone will be the same in my iPad and vice versa. No so with this app. Anything I put in one place has to be manually moved/copies to the other.
Does the job nicely
This app does what it says it will. You upload your abc collections using the built in web server. Then you can create tunebooks and manually attach selected tunes. A bit tedious but it works. I use it for dance tunes. On my screen the music is too small. It would be nice if the app optimized the view for you. And really, to play from it would require a bigger screen. But as a memory aide, a nice little program.
Not perfect, but none better on any platform.
This is, simply put, one of the best abc programs available. For any platform, not just the iPhone. The user interface is simple and clear. The tunes sound ... not bad ... in MIDI and the staff and note presentations look good.
Editing is simple, and grabbing a tune from the web is about as easy as can be. The only real complaint that I had was that tunes were difficult to organize. Then, this morning, there was a new version...
Now, tunes can be added to tunebooks (I'm not clear whether these tunebooks are more like tags, or more like folders with copies of the tunes JH labs web page hasn't caught up with this version yet). You can also search and sort by key, meter or title. In addition you can search by an arbitrary string of abc. There seem to be a few glitches. For example, I'm not sure that the sorting by index works properly. The app still merits five stars because this is about as good as it gets in an all-round abc app.
With Family Sharing set up, up to six family members can use this app.
