Mediathek provides you access to mostly public TV content of German, Austrian, and Swiss TV stations. Unlike in the US, the better, more original content is produced by public TV stations, whereas private TV stations mostly have purchased US content, and produce clones of US shows. Hence, public TV stations deliver the more valuable programming for people who want to become familiar with German language and culture. The app runs on iOS, TVOS, and MacOS - we use them on all three platforms. Mediathek does not produce the content, but simple makes it available and curates it so that you get the same user interface look, regardless the content source (which is typically free), this convenience alone is worth subscribing to it. No fiddling around, no searching, or going through awkward German language Web sites, just load it up on Apple TV and browse as if it would be Netflix or any other streaming service. All content in one single app. If you want to learn German or are an expat with children who you want to learn German, or your spouse is not a native German speaker and is interested in picking you the language, simply get Mediathek. Btw, there is also a curated version just for children, called Mediathek Kids. (You may need a VPN service to Germany for some content such as live soccer games, or some franchised children shows. There is one offered by the authors of these app, or you can use any other other reputable service such as Express VPN. Most movie and series content is available without VPN, though.) Finally, there is also a Live version of this app, which shows you live TV - this may be more or less useful to your because of the time difference. For us in the US, you see evening shows at early afternoon. But is valuable for live sports programming.
