What’s New

Version 1.9.12

This update contains these improvements:

• Fixes a bug that could cause some articles to display extraneous whitespace.
• Fixes a bug that caused duplicate images on articles from interestingengineering.com.
• API requests to Feedbin now use the feedbin.com domain instead of feedbin.me.
• Adds forward-thinking compatibility improvements.
• Adds an Unlock Purchase Status section to the bottom of the About screen. This shows when you purchased the Unlock.
• Checks the Unread Web Service looking for announcements once a day. If you wish to disable this, you can turn off Show App News in the Advanced section of the Settings screen.

The last two bullet items are intended to help prepare customers for Unread 2, a major new version that I expect to release within the next few months. Follow the Golden Hill Software Blog at goldenhillsoftware.com/blog/ for updates.

My Top 2 iOS apps

I have used it every day for 4 years now; this along with a podcast app that I won't mention here, are absolutely the top 2 best designed iOS apps and must haves. I am a news junkie and that means tons of reading (and listening) and knowing what to skip so you focus on what is relevant and skip what you have read before. There is no other easier way to design this than what Unread has been doing. At least I don't know of a better app after having used 300 apps of all kinds in 10 years, and I don't even do gaming apps, I mostly use productivity apps. This one is in my Top 2, and truly deserves the only app review I have ever given.

One thing I don't want the app designer to change is font. Please do not .. wait, dare not.. change from Whitney font. Nothing else can ever be so clean and pristine. I hear what other reviewers are asking you to change but perhaps as an old-timer, I would like you to just retain what you have. It's neat, compact and most well designed that I can see. I would in fact encourage you to move to a subscription model where readers pay at least $10 each year. It will keep some people away but I think that's a better model to sustain your business and not worry about closing shop than a one time unlock. You app is worth far more than $10 for a lifetime.

Elegant, thoughtful design makes keeping up with RSS much more enjoyable

I love RSS, but have felt my interactions with it becoming more fraught and adversarial every time I start falling behind, leading to an inevitable, exasperated purge every few weeks or so.

Unread, so far, has solved this problem for me entirely by fundamentally changing how I interact with my feed. The clean, eye-pleasing design is a joy to behold, and—combined with the indispensable “Scroll to Mark As Read” feature—renders unhurried scanning through my feed refreshingly friction free. In essence, whereas most RSS readers provide a raft of tools that encourage “batch processing” and feed management, Unread promotes a simplified, streamlined interaction modality, boiling the experience down to the user and the text. For me, at least, this approach has been a godsend—now that I’ve tried it, and can’t imagine going back to how I was using RSS before.

Words to describe awesome

If you had read about my reviews earlier on this version 1.8.2. They were great in fixing major bugs issues such as feedly login.

I do not usually write a lot of reviews on application in Apple AppStore or Google Playstore, if I do it’s because the application maintain a sickly consistency which does not break a lot and provide useful features. This keeps me to provide good reviews.

The developer focus on updating the application to device model fast. Fixing bugs and continuous maintain on the readability are some which I would give thumbs up to. The themes provided are sufficient for readers for different time of reading such as morning or night.

Some great features I wish they would consider not a must want
• When initiating a left swipe to access the quick menu when reading an article it would be great if the height is adjustable ( or a rethink on how to perform single hand operation to reach these menu easier ) my hands are small and it does help to benefit bigger screen mobile phones or iPhone 6s Plus kind of resolution

• Readability mode when tapping on title, I really hope it’s possible to configure gesture such as finger double tap to initiate the mode.
