Ratings and Reviews
Lovely app, wish it could learn what I like
I'll be honest, I really enjoy this app and always get compliments on my desktops from coworkers. I also find that these images relax me. However, I don't always like the images, not because they are not world-class, but rather just not my aesthetic.
I would love it if I could help train the algorithm for the kinds of colors and picture types I like and have it steer more into the style of images I tend to like. For example, I don't like images with a lot of white since it makes the icons on my desktop look funny. Also, if the images are too noisy and complex, it makes it hard to navigate files/folders.
Finally, and this is easily my #1 request. Please add an option to the preferences where I can select where I want my downloads to be stored. I would definitely add them directly to my desktop images folder and not the downloads folder.
Inspirational wallpapers to infinity!
It's a very nice app, works well. I cannot understand some of the complaints, because if you don't like the supplied images, you can easily create your own collection of images that you like from Unsplash and use that as the source of wallpapers. And there are TONS of beautiful, high-quality images on Unsplash. Hundreds, thousands.
My only complaint with this app is how it handles portrait orientation images. It seems to blow them up too much. They are blurry, even though the source image is high res, plenty wide for on-screen use. But I just always choose landscape for my custom collection, and it works perfectly.
It would be great if there was a 'smart search' feature where you could choose criteria (keywords, keywords to exclude, high key or low key, color/black, landscape/portrait, etc.) to get more dynamic new content. Would be very cool.
Does what it claims, but should be more
Unsplash has some gorgeous photography—blissfully free of borderline NSFW anime images...—and the app does the job of shuffling through them. The inability to log in to an Unplash account and favorite photos is actually refreshing, in a world where every company wants to metastasize into an advertising and social media platform. More sorely missed is a larger set of competencies pertaining to, you know, setting wallpapers: specifying minimum resolutions, selecting less bright images when in dark mode, auto-change frequencies higher than once a day, and multi-monitor options beyond "do something on all spaces" (although I blame macOS itself for the shameful inability to have one image span multiple monitors.) Hey, Unsplash, simplicity is nice and all, but maybe just a few more toggles couldn't hurt? Thanks!
