The popular and award-winning bookmark manager now available in a native Intel version for the latest OS X with support for Retina displays.

URL Manager Pro allows you to manage your bookmarks independent from a web browser, yet use your bookmarks with any web browser, like Safari, Firefox, Chrome etc.

You can create and save several separate bookmark documents and you can access them all from the systemwide bookmarks menu.

Using a systemwide bookmarks menu, you have access to your bookmarks in any app or web browser.

You can also bookmark the current web page directly to URL Manager Pro from within your favorite web browser. On Yosemite, URL Manager Pro features a Share extension to bookmark the current web page.

In the URL Manager Pro documents, you can manage your bookmarks easily with drag and drop. You can add notes and colors to your bookmarks. You can also view your bookmarks in any font and size you want.

URL Manager Pro indexes its documents using Spotlight technology. This means that you can use Spotlight to find any bookmark, URL or term that you saved in URL Manager Pro documents.

You can import bookmarks from all popular browsers, like Safari, Firefox, Chrome etc. You can harvest URLs from text files and various other sources, like web pages, as well. You can also export your bookmarks to other formats like HTML, XML and XBEL.

Included is a User Manual (of 60 pages) in PDF format (see Help menu), which you can easily print out and read at your leisure.

Documentation does not match experience

I have no idea why this app gets 4 stars, because the User Manual does not match its actual behavior. For example, after loading up the "Sample" document, the user manual shows that under the Extra menu (the URLMP System menu on the upper right), there are supposed to be folders of bookmarks and bookmarks draping downwards in a hierarchy. There is only "URL Manager Pro" with an arrow to the right that shows nothing significant. Another example: the User Guide discusses a nonexistent button to choose a bookmark file to open at app startup. There is no such button in the prefs.

There are other major disappointments: why do I have to open a file with a huge window to clutter up my desktop just to see my bookmarks? Why can't the bookmarks simply appear in a hierarchy, and leave the ugly window closed. This developer has been around since before Mac System 7, and should by now have some idea of how to design a user interface.

I have worked with this program and its User Guide for 4 hours straight, and am unable to make it behave as documented. If someone can tell me what I am doing wrong, I would appreciate it.

Not what I expected for the price.

It’s got a lot of potential and really has a lot to offer. It’s a little clunky though, especially compared to the smoother apps that people are writing with newer frameworks. I would like to see the following upgrades:
• Allow drag and drop from a browser directly to a folder, not just the main list.
• Allow drag and drop when sorting in the app when you drop it on the line item or name, not just the folder icon.
• Create a right-click menu that lets you do things like the OS does, new folder, new bookmark, duplicate, copy, paste, etc.
• Have someone name their new library when they first make it, then you can enable autosave by default. I kind of expected the app to autosave.
• Let people test it first, you’ll likely get more feedback to make the app better.

That’s all for now.

Potential, but only potential

This looks to be exactly the app I’ve been looking for: all of my bookmarked URLs on my different browsers integrated and accessible from all of those browsers. Better would be accessible from my iPhone as well. Nice and secure (well, kinda). But when I tried it, I can’t get it to import my Chrome bookmarks. I contacted the company, and they said there’s nothing wrong. Well, sorry, but there is something wrong.

The result is a pretty dissatisfied customer with a sense of abandonment by the company.

Conclusion: Stay away. Stay far away.
