"Variations on the Theme of Life" is an interactive media piece presented through the Linfield College Department of Music and the Linfield College Student Symposium.
The core of the piece is cellular automata and Conway's Game of Life: a grid on which each square follows a set of simple rules as to whether it will live or die. Tapping the screen moves these rules through one iteration; swiping down creates an entirely new world, resetting to the beginning state once more. Each grid has a unique sound, played by the cells on the grid.
Adjust the number of versions of the Game of Life running at once, how fast the music moves, and which chords it can produce until you've created your own unique soundscape, or use one of the preset modes to create an energetic electronic piece or a tranquil background befitting a meditation session.
The music you hear every time is unique; nobody has ever heard that exact combination of sounds before, and nobody ever will again.
