From Tin Man Games, the award winning studio that has released over 30 digital gamebooks and interactive fiction apps on the App Store, including those from the Fighting Fantasy series. The Warlock of Firetop Mountain goes one step further from previous releases, jumping from the 2D page and transforming into an epic 3D domain, with new areas to explore, characters to meet, and of course, monsters to slay!
The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, originally published in 1982 as a paperback and selling over two million copies, was a pioneering release that popularized the solo gamebook and successfully brought the role-playing game experience to a wider audience. Writers, Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone, founded Games Workshop and have continued to have a distinguished careers in both tabletop gaming and video games. Original illustrator, Russ Nicholson, has also returned 35 years later to create new artwork for the game!
The game comes pre-loaded with four heroes: Lunika Ekaadi, Dekion Strom, Alexandra of Blacksand and Arran Gottspeed. More heroes can be bought, with new combat skills and story quests, from within the app.

Ratings and Reviews
Editors’ Notes
We're huge fans of Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone’s Fighting Fantasy game books, and this latest page-to-screen translation is especially wonderful, mixing choose-your-own-adventure dilemmas with bite-sized, turn-based battles. It’s all done with a clever tabletop game aesthetic that truly brings this classic book to life.
Enjoyable entry in the genre but some minor gripe
Update: screen orientation issue fixed, rating raised :) Not quite perfect but very nice indeed.
So far, so fun. I think it's distinct enough from Inkle's offerings, and I'm not going to complain about more entries in one of my favourite genres. Looks great on the larger iPad (but a minor issue, at the end).
However, now that you have this game engine working, and played it safe by recycling yet again an ancient gamebook, how about using it for some new, original content? (and of course the same holds true for Inkle as well) I'd very much support that! With my wallet!
One star docked for not auto sensing orientation... I understand that portrait mode is not an option since it changes the whole aspect ratio & layout, but come on, at least flip your game the right side up... many people use non-rotatable cases, how is that supposed to work? (Er, well... I had to fold over the cover completely and prop the whole thing up against something else on the table, awkward)
Great presentation, repetitive gameplay
Back in the day with so few choices for solo roleplay, adventure books seemed like a way to experience an RPG when there was no D&D game happening. Today there are so many better solo options to scratch the RPG itch, so why play a trial and error adventure game with somewhat random combat? Nostalgia perhaps, but replaying the same adventure over and over trying to remember the right moves is exactly the downside of those adventure books that modern tech should be used to overcome, not enshrine. Game books were tiresome then, and now it is no different, except for the fact that there are so many way better game choices out there. Cool graphics cannot hide very mediocre gameplay. Time better spent elsewhere.
